Chapter 71 - The Zero-Second Plunge

The shrill, mechanical warble of the scuttling timer tore through the churning salt spray. Three seconds. Two seconds. The world contracted to the vibration beneath my boots and the cold, unyielding weight of the quantum drive locked inside the reinforced case against my ribs. Across the churning divide of black ocean, Admiral Vance lowered his transceiver, a silhouette carved out of pristine dress blues and monstrous conviction. He genuinely believed that history was an altar, and that I had been bred solely to bleed across it.

I did not waste my breath screaming into the gale. Every instinct drilled into my marrow through twelve years of service took over, replacing panic with terrifying, crystalline focus. If the reactor detonated while the *Leviathan* was surfaced, the thermal blossom would vaporize both vessels within a three-mile radius. There was only one path left, and it defied every standard operating manual ever drafted by the Pentagon.

I dropped my sidearm, sprinted across the slick titanium plating of the observation deck, and threw myself straight down the primary access trunk before the pressure seal could engage. "Miller!" I roared into the open internal comm line dangling from the hatch rim. "Flood the forward ballast! Emergency ballast transfer—blow the aft tanks right now!"

"Captain, the scuttle protocol is active!" Miller’s voice crackled, distorted by rising electromagnetic static. "The reactor bulkhead is breaching in—"

"Blow the tanks, Chief! Ride the displacement wave!"

I slammed the heavy pressure wheel shut with my bare, bleeding hands, locking the exterior dogs into place just as the first charge blew. It was not a nuclear detonation—not yet. Vance had triggered the shaped demolition charges designed to collapse the cooling conduits and drown the compartment in radioactive steam. The shockwave lifted eighty thousand tons of submarine into the air. Steel groaned, shrieked, and bent like wet cardboard. The violent upward thrust hurled me across the companionway, slamming my shoulder into the structural ribbing with a sickening crack.

Darkness flashed at the edges of my vision, but the sound of rushing seawater snapped me awake. The *Leviathan* was rolling violently to port, listing sixty degrees into the pitch-black abyss. Outside the reinforced hull, millions of gallons of frigid ocean rushed into the breached outer compartments, dragging the rogue behemoth downward into the crushing depths before the secondary thermal core could reach critical ignition. We were not escaping. We were sinking into the dark, pulled by gravity and sheer ruin, straight beneath the keel of the *Dauntless*.
