Chapter 37 - The Cell in Butler County

While the *Farragut* surged eastward at maximum speed, cutting through the churning swells of the Atlantic, miles inland within the concrete confines of the Butler County Jail, an entirely different reckoning was taking place.
Arthur Whitaker sat on the edge of a stained metal cot, staring blankly at the reinforced security glass of the interrogation room. Across the steel table, Kevin slumped with dark circles under his bloodshot eyes, his pristine suit long since replaced by an ill-fitting orange jumpsuit.
The heavy steel door buzzed open, and two men entered. They were not FBI agents, nor were they NCIS officers. They wore sharp, tailored civilian suits and carried slender briefcases, but their cold, empty gazes radiated lethal indifference.
"Who are you?" Kevin whined, his voice trembling like a frightened child's. "Did our lawyer send you? Look, I told them already, Eleanor is the one who was in the Navy! She must have set this up! I’m just an investor, you have to get me out of here!"
One of the men placed a single black tablet on the metal table, sliding it toward Arthur.
"Be quiet, Kevin," Arthur whispered, his voice cracking as he looked at the men’s cold expressions. "They aren't lawyers."
"Correct, Mr. Whitaker," the lead man said softly. "We represent the interests that financed your sudden lifestyle expansion over the past three years. The new cars. The country club memberships. The mansion in Oakwood."
Kevin swallowed hard, his skin turning sickly gray. "W-where is Vice Admiral Sterling? He promised we’d be protected! He said the military would never touch an operation backed by the procurement office!"
The man offered a thin, mirthless smile. "Vice Admiral Sterling is currently liquidating his remaining domestic assets. Which brings us to you two. A loose end in an Ohio county jail is an unacceptable liability."
Arthur’s face drained of color as the full horror of their situation crystallized. "You're going to kill us."
"We are going to offer you a choice," the man countered coldly. "Sign these confessions stating that your daughter, Commander Eleanor Whitaker, was the operational mastermind who supplied the classified blueprints from Norfolk. Sign them, and your wife, Evelyn, remains comfortable in what remains of your estate. Refuse, and none of you will survive to see the morning sun."

Kevin lunged for the pen on the table without a second thought. "I’ll sign! I’ll sign whatever you want! Just keep me safe!"
Arthur watched his son, the golden boy he had poured every ounce of his pride and wealth into, groveling like a rat to frame his own sister. For the first time in his life, Arthur Whitaker saw Kevin for what he truly was: a weak, cowardly parasite. And for the first time, the memory of Eleanor standing proud in her white uniform pierced his soul like a shard of broken glass.
