Chapter 95 - The Air Lock of 1982

We dropped through the lower hatch onto a grated steel catwalk that hummed with steady, low-frequency current. The silence of the facility was heavy and suffocating, broken only by the distant, rhythmic cycling of deep-water atmospheric scrubbers. Dawson and Miller took point, sidearms drawn, their tactical lights cutting through the darkness of a corridor that had not seen a human being in decades.

"Secure the perimeter of the airlock," I instructed, stepping down onto the primary decking. The dust beneath our combat boots was undisturbed, preserving the faded yellow safety lines painted along the floor forty years prior.

Every bulkhead was stamped with military-grade serial numbers, but directly beneath each government registry was the corporate seal of Dayton Industrial Dynamics. As we moved deeper toward the central control nexus, the architecture shifted from rugged naval utility to the lavish, wood-paneled vanity my family had always favored in Ohio.

"Look at this," Miller said, his light beam stopping on a brass commemorative plaque mounted beside the central bulkhead doors.

I walked over and wiped away forty years of accumulated salt dust with the sleeve of my uniform.

*PROJECT THALASSA — COMMISSIONED OCTOBER 14, 1982.*

*DIRECTOR: ARTHUR HOLLOWAY.*

*CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER: RICHARD HOLLOWAY.*

*"POWER IS NOT CONFERRED BY NATIONS; IT IS ANCHORED IN THE DEEP."*

"Arthur was my grandfather," I said quietly, the cold reality settling deep into my chest. "Richard was my father. They didn't just build this behind the Navy’s back. They used government capital to construct a sovereign fallback position."

Before Miller could reply, an automated motion sensor overhead clicked softly. A row of recessed fluorescent strips flickered to life along the corridor, snapping on one by one in a rapid succession that led straight into the heart of the facility.

At the far end of the hallway, a heavy blast door ground open with hydraulic groan, revealing a vast, two-story control theater surrounded by archaic mainframe terminals, spinning magnetic reel-to-reel tape drives, and a central spherical plotting tank filled with luminescent liquid.

As our boots crossed the threshold into the theater, the primary terminal screen chimed. A synthesized, electronic chime that filled the cavernous room.

A mechanical voice, synthesized from an audio sample that chilled my blood, echoed from the ceiling speakers. It was my father's voice, captured in the prime of his arrogance forty years ago.

"Identity verified: Holloway direct lineage confirmed. Welcome to Deep Shelf Command, Eleanor. If you are hearing this recording, your mother and I have failed to keep you in the shallows."
