Chapter 45 - The Admiral’s Line

Naval Station Norfolk was less than one hundred miles southwest. Navigating coastal waters while marked as hostile by a corrupt Vice Admiral was a suicide run for an ordinary vessel. But the *Farragut* was not an ordinary vessel; she was outfitted with experimental radar-absorbent materials and a passive acoustic baffle system designed specifically to slip past high-tech blockades.
We ran forty feet below normal radar exposure, riding the trough of heavy coastal swells, our communications array completely muted. But to survive the arrival, I needed an ally on the inside—someone whose authority stood beyond Ross's reach.
I stepped into the secure communications vault, plugging my personal biometrics into the emergency commander's console. There was only one number stored in my direct line of succession.
Rear Admiral Vance. The man who had placed my command bars on my shoulders. The man who had walked across the Dayton auditorium, stood before my sneering parents, and spoken the four words that had permanently altered the trajectory of my life: *She outranks you all.*
The secure line pulsed with static before a low, gravelly voice broke through. "Identify."
"Vance, this is Commander Eleanor Whitaker."
A brief pause hung on the line, heavy with unspoken tension. "Eleanor. Every sensor net on the Eastern Seaboard is screaming your name. They claim you’ve gone rogue, that you fired upon naval assets, and that your father has laid bare a decades-long espionage ring."
"You know my father, Admiral," I said evenly. "You saw him in Dayton. Do you honestly believe that man knows the difference between a secure satellite link and a toaster?"
Vance let out a dry, resonant breath. "I never believed a word of the report. But Vice Admiral Ross has the Joint Chiefs' ear. He has presented hard copies of your father’s statement, along with bank accounts registered in your name."
"I have the counter-evidence, Sir," I countered firmly. "I have captured Ross’s nephew, Julian Sterling. I have their primary financial server, unredacted communication logs, and cryptographic proof that Ross ordered a lethal missile strike against an active United States warship less than four hours ago."
The silence on the other end was absolute. When Vance spoke again, the calm authority in his voice sent a surge of strength through my veins.
"Where are you, Commander?"
"Approaching the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, running dark," I replied. "We can hold off an assault, but once we enter the harbor, Ross will attempt to lock down the docks and seize the ship before the data can reach the Secretary of the Navy."

"Bring the *Farragut* in, Eleanor," Vance said, his tone turning into cold steel. "I will be waiting on Pier 12 with a battalion of Marine Fleet Anti-Terrorism Security personnel. Let Ross come to arrest you. It's time we finish what we started in Ohio."
