Chapter 34 - Rogue Vessel

By 0300, the lights of coastal Virginia had faded into a faint ribbon along the western horizon. The *Farragut* ran completely dark, her running lights extinguished, her phased-array radars operating in passive silent mode to avoid electronic detection.

Inside the Combat Information Center, the dim blue glow of the tactical consoles illuminated the exhausted, resolute faces of my bridge crew. We were, by every official metric in the Pentagon’s automated logs, a rogue warship. A phantom.

"Captain," Petty Officer Lin spoke up from the signals desk, her voice shaking slightly. "We just intercepted an emergency broadcast on the military fleet-wide broadcast network. It’s issued under the authority of Vice Admiral Sterling at the Pentagon."

"Read it, Lin," I said, leaning over the status display.

"It states... Commander Eleanor Whitaker has suffered an acute psychiatric breakdown following the arrest of her immediate family in Ohio. It claims you orchestrated an armed takeover of the *Farragut* and are currently considered an armed and dangerous combatant. All Atlantic assets are ordered to intercept and disable us."

A dead silence descended upon the room. The men and women around me turned their heads slowly, looking to me for answers. They had risked their careers, their freedom, and their lives simply by following my order to slip the lines.

I stood straight, meeting the gaze of every single sailor in the room.

"You all know who I am," I said, my voice ringing clear and steady against the hum of the electronics. "You know the sweat and blood we put into earning this ship’s reputation. You know my family was arrested in Dayton—they were criminals, and I refused to shield them. But what Vice Admiral Sterling isn't telling the fleet is that my father was just a courier. The real traitors are sitting in air-conditioned offices in Washington, selling our next-generation missile guidance technology to foreign buyers under the table."

I tapped the central console hard. "They used my family to smear my name, and they attacked Admiral Vance because he figured it out. I will not surrender this ship to men who sell our country out from the shadows. If any one of you wants to step down, you can take a life raft when we reach international waters. But if you stand with me, we clear our names and bring these bastards down."

Chief Sullivan stepped forward first, slamming his hand onto the bulkhead. "We're with you to the bottom of the Atlantic, Captain."

One by one, every sailor echoed the sentiment. We were no longer just a warship on patrol. We were the only wall left standing between the fleet and complete betrayal.
