Chapter 81 - The Black Leviathan in the Channel

The blare of the general quarters klaxon tore through the crisp sea air, shattering what little peace had settled over the forward deck of the *Dauntless*. Sailors dropped their mooring lines, scurrying across the slip-resistant decking like ants whose hill had been kicked. My left arm, strapped tight against my ribs in its heavy sling, throbbed with a dull, vicious ache, but adrenaline burned the pain away in an instant.
"Lookout, verify bearing!" I barked into the wireless comm strapped to my collar, stepping up to the forward rail beside Chief Miller.
Miller dropped his coffee cup. The paper crumpled under his boot as black liquid splattered across the gray steel deck. He raised his binoculars, his knuckles turning chalky white against the rubberized casing. "Holy Mother of God... Captain, look at the displacement. That’s no standard diesel boat. She’s huge!"
Three hundred yards ahead, directly across the narrow navigation channel of Norfolk’s outer harbor, the churn of churning brine boiled into an eruption of white foam. A massive, elongated black hull rose from the deep, shedding tons of Atlantic water like an ancient monster awakening from the abyss. Sheets of dark spray cascaded down sides coated in non-reflective anechoic tiles.
There were no flags. No hull numbers. No identification markings painted along her sail. But as the sail broke clear of the waterline, the bridge wings emerged—and on the flat face of the conning tower, painted in stark, crimson paint, was a jagged geometric emblem that made the blood freeze in my veins: the double-crested raptor of the Holloway family crest, identical to the signet ring my father had worn at every Sunday dinner in Oakwood.
"Captain Holloway!" Admiral Henderson’s voice crackled through the deck speaker system from the bridge high above us. "Do not engage with small arms! Harbor Defense Command reports that vessel is broadcasting an override code that has locked down Naval Station Norfolk’s automated shore batteries!"
"Override code?" Miller shouted over the roaring diesels of our own ship reversing thrusters. "How the hell does a rogue boat get the automated defense keys to Norfolk?"
"The message on the tablet," I said, my voice eerily calm as I gripped the cold brass rail with my good hand. "Vance wasn’t the head of this serpent. He was just the logistics man. The architects—the old money, the board of trustees who financed my father’s shell corporations—they’re holding the keys."

Suddenly, the submarine's external loudhailers clicked on. The sound cut through the whine of our carrier’s gas turbines with deafening clarity. A voice echoed across the open harbor, smooth, cultured, and dripping with patrician arrogance.
"Welcome home, Commander Eleanor Holloway. Your father sent his regards before he was locked away. But you should know better than anyone... Dayton never surrenders its investments."
