Chapter 49 - The Twin Paradox

Mateo didn't dive for cover. He didn't raise a shield. He stood his ground, letting the charging energy glow brightly against his face, his eyes locking onto his brother’s golden gaze.
"You remember the auditing hall, Marcos," Mateo said softly, his voice cutting through the hum of the kinetic turbines. "You remember the look on Álvaro's face when we pulled the Blue Folder out of my backpack. You told me we were going to build an empire of our own. A real one. Built on truth, not his lies."
Marcos’s hand trembled slightly. The golden light across his skin flickered with a faint blue undertone.
"Useless sentimentality!" Cassian hissed, pressing a control stud on his wrist gauntlet. "Aegis Prime, eliminate the target!"
The energy in Marcos’s hand surged, yet he did not fire. A tear slipped from the corner of his eye, evaporating instantly against the burning heat of the synthetic core in his chest.
"You always did the differential equations faster than me, Marcos," Mateo stepped closer, closing the distance between them until the tip of Marcos’s glowing hand was resting directly against his own heart. "And I always found the hidden variables. Do you want to know what the hidden variable was in the Blue Folder?"
Mateo placed his palm flat over Marcos’s glowing chest, over the mechanical core.
"It wasn't an activation code for Cassian," Mateo whispered, reciting the ancient acoustic cipher Lucía had hummed to them when they were babies in the hospital ward. "It was an emergency shutdown loop."
Mateo’s own heart surged, discharging a massive, organic bio-resonance directly into Marcos’s synthetic node.
The frequency collided like two opposing tidal waves!
Marcos let out an agonizing, human scream as the golden light in his eyes shattered into a million brilliant sparks, snapping back into their natural, beautiful hazel. The kinetic field collapsed. Lucía dropped to the deck, gasping for air, while Marcos fell forward into Mateo’s arms, both boys tumbling to the ground, panting, exhausted, but whole.
"No!" Cassian roared in pure fury, pulling his sidearm. "I will not let children destroy decades of evolution!"

Before Cassian could pull the trigger, the entire command bridge groaned as structural alarms shrieked in deafening panic. Marcos, still lying in Mateo’s arms, raised a trembling hand and pointed at the primary terminal.
"I didn't just shut down the core, Cassian," Marcos whispered, a fierce, exhausted smile touching his lips. "I purged your engine coolant into the ion drives. We're going down."
