Chapter 43 - The Resonator's Echo

Down on the ravaged spire, Mateo sat cross-legged amidst the debris, his fingers flying across his modified terminal. The rain lashed against his face, but he didn't blink. Lucía knelt beside him, wrapping an insulated thermal blanket around his shivering shoulders.

"Mateo, we have to move," Lucía pleaded softly, though her own eyes were haunted. "Julian Vance’s remaining private security forces will converge on this rooftop within minutes. Álvaro’s assets are falling, but the authorities will declare this an act of domestic terror."

"I can't leave yet, Mom," Mateo muttered through gritted teeth. "Look at this frequency."

He turned the screen toward her. A dual sine wave was pulsing in erratic harmony across a black terminal window. One line was erratic, spiked with blue interference. The other was a perfectly smooth, golden oscillation.

"When Cassian triggered the core in Marcos, he didn't realize we were monozygotic twins with identical neural architecture," Mateo explained, his voice trembling with an eerie maturity. "Whatever nanites or bio-synthetic nodes they implanted in Marcos’s heart... my body produced an organic counter-frequency during our gestation. He is the receiver. I am the transmitter."

Lucía gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "The phantom flutter... When you were three years old, every time Marcos ran a fever, your heart rate doubled."

"Cassian thinks he took an isolated supercomputer into the clouds," Mateo said, a fierce, predatory grin cutting through the tears on his face. "He took a terminal that still has an active backdoor connection to my brain. But my portable deck isn't powerful enough to punch through the dreadnought's military firewalls."

"Then we need an industrial-grade quantum relay," a hoarse, broken voice spoke from the shadows of the stairwell.

Lucía and Mateo snapped their heads toward the entrance.

Stumbling through the smoke was Álvaro Miller. His custom bespoke suit was shredded and smeared with grease. The pristine facade of the billionaire patriarch had completely evaporated, leaving behind a shivering, hollowed-out husk of a man whose empire had been reduced to ashes in a single night.
