Chapter 40 - The Sovereign Descends

The transmission dish hummed with blinding electromagnetic power.
High in the upper atmosphere, the Coalition's geostationary orbital link ruptured under the massive, concentrated data burst sent by Mateo's counter-algorithm. Across the city below, the streetlights and corporate skyscrapers flickered wildly as the master control grid severed its ties to the shadow network.
"We did it," Mateo breathed, leaning against the tower rail, exhaling a cloud of cold mist. "The neural destabilization frequency is dead. Our synaptic pathways are completely clear."
Lucía emerged from the lower maintenance hatch onto the catwalk, her face streaked with tears of relief. She threw her arms around both of them, sobbing into their rain-soaked hair. "You did it... my brilliant boys... you freed yourselves..."
Then, the rain stopped.
Not because the storm had passed—but because something colossal had moved between the storm clouds and the tower, blotting out the sky itself.
A low, bone-crushing atmospheric pressure descended over Mount Ridge. The air grew suddenly frigid, freezing the moisture on the metal railings into instantaneous frost.
Hovering silently mere hundreds of feet above the transmission spire was the Coalition's dreadnought aerostat. Its massive black hull stretched for over a quarter of a mile, utterly silent, defying gravity through reverse-polarity electromagnetic drives.
A single beam of blinding, golden coherent light pierced downward from the center of the vessel, striking the catwalk directly between the twins and Lucía.
Inside the beam of light, a life-sized quantum projection solidified.
Dr. Cassian Cross stood before them, looking down at Marcos and Mateo with an expression of ecstatic, terrifying admiration.
"Magnificent," Cassian’s projection whispered, clapping his hands with slow, deliberate rhythm. "You didn't just counter the satellite frequency. You reversed the carrier wave and mapped the exact quantum coordinates of my vessel."
"Cassian, let them go!" Lucía screamed, shielding her sons behind her. "They beat your system! It's over!"
"Over?" Cassian chuckled, his eyes glowing with an unholy brilliance. "Lucía, this was never an execution. This was the final entrance examination."
Cassian pointed a slender finger directly at Marcos.
"You thought the neural architecture was built to control machines, didn't you, boys?" Cassian smiled, a dark, fathomless grin spreading across his face. "Phase One was cognitive mastery. Phase Two begins now."
Suddenly, Marcos gasped, his eyes flying wide open.
He didn't fall from pain. Instead, his body lifted inches off the metal grating of the catwalk, suspended by an invisible electromagnetic resonance emanating from within his own chest.
Beneath Marcos’s skin, across his neck and temple, glowing geometric circuitry of luminescent gold began to flare to life, pulsing in exact synchronization with the dreadnought hovering above!
"Marcos!" Mateo screamed, reaching out to grab his brother's hand—only to be violently thrown backward onto the steel deck by a shockwave of raw bio-electric energy.

"The Blue Folder was never a set of files, Mateo," Cassian’s voice boomed across the sky like thunder. "The Blue Folder was the trigger that activated the synthetic core inside your brother's heart. And now, he belongs entirely to the Coalition."
As Marcos hung suspended in mid-air, his hazel eyes turning into blinding pools of pure, computational gold, the dreadnought’s primary tractor beam engaged, locking onto his rising body—while Mateo watched in helpless, screaming terror from the floor!
