Chapter 22 - Flight from the Gilded Cage

The armored subterranean service elevator plummeted toward the lowest level of the Grand Plaza Hotel. Lucía’s knuckles were white as she clutched both of her boys against her chest, her body trembling with adrenaline.

"Arthur, where are we going?" Lucía demanded, her voice tight and breathless. "If Julian has federal marshals, they’ll have the perimeter locked down. Airspace, highways, train stations—"

"Julian has *rogue* elements within an obscure bio-security division," Arthur corrected sharply, his fingers flying across an encrypted satellite tablet. "He moved too fast because you humiliated his brother in open court. He wants you terrified. He wants you to surrender the boys before anyone verifies the chain of custody on that forged document."

*Ding.*

The elevator doors parted to reveal an underground private loading dock. Waiting in the bay was a fleet of three identical matte-black, armor-plated SUVs with tinted windows and reinforced steel chassis.

"Get in the middle vehicle," Arthur instructed, ushering them toward the open rear door. "My private hangar at Teterboro is already locked down. We’re moving to the compound in the Hudson Valley. It has military-grade electronic shielding. No satellite, no drone, and no federal surveillance ping can pierce it."

As the SUV’s doors slammed shut, the heavy engine roared to life, launching them into the underground tunnel system.

Mateo immediately flipped open his ruggedized laptop, connecting it to the vehicle's secure tactical uplink. "Marcos, repeat the cipher sequence you saw on the bottom margin. Every character."

Marcos closed his eyes. His photographic memory reconstructed the paper with microscopic precision. "Alpha-seven, backslash, sigma-bracket, four-nine-nine-zero-Delta. Then a ten-digit hash string: four-eight-eight-two-six-seven..."

Mateo’s fingers were a blur across the mechanical keyboard. "Matching hash... scanning our childhood archival drive... Found it!"

A high-resolution image popped up on the screen: a battered, dog-eared notebook filled with childish handwriting and advanced differential equations, dated October 14th, seven years ago.

"Look at the timestamp on the federal annex Julian showed us," Mateo pointed at the screen, his hazel eyes flashing with outrage. "Julian dated the biological synthesis filing to June 2009—two years before we were even born! But he used an algorithm Marcos didn't invent until 2017!"

"He forged the historical record," Lucía whispered, a glimmer of hope cutting through the terror in her chest. "He copied Marcos's childhood work and backdated it into an old classified military patent archive to claim you were engineered before birth!"

"Exactly," Marcos said, his voice dropping into a chilling, lethal calm that reminded Lucía terrifyingly of her late father in his prime. "Julian Vance thinks he manufactured a cage for us. But all he did was leave his digital fingerprints inside a federal crime."
