Chapter 16 - The Ambush at the Lab

The boardroom meeting ended not with signatures, but with a frantic, stammering adjournment as Hector Sterling’s board collapsed into internal panic and frantic phone calls to criminal defense attorneys. Lucía, Vance, and the boys had walked out of the glass tower with their heads held high, leaving behind a kingdom on fire.

Yet, as night fell over the city, the victory felt heavy.

"They won't just accept this, Arthur," Lucía said that evening, pacing the pristine research lab they had rented on the fringe of the National Institute of Technology campus. "People like Sterling don't roll over. If they face ruin, they lash out."

"Arthur has filed an emergency injunction and handed copies of the ledger to the federal prosecutor," Marcos said from the central workbench, where he was soldering a micro-conductor onto a gleaming silver spherical device. "The authorities are executing a search warrant on Sterling’s offices tomorrow morning at dawn."

"Which leaves them eight hours of darkness," Mateo noted quietly, looking out the reinforced glass windows into the rain-slicked courtyard below.

Suddenly, the overhead fluorescent lights flickered once. Twice. Then went completely black.

The hum of the HVAC system died, plunging the cavernous research facility into dead, suffocating silence.

"Marcos! Mateo!" Lucía gasped, instinctively reaching into the darkness to shield her boys.

"Don't move, Mama," Marcos said, his voice impossibly calm.

Down the hallway, the heavy magnetic security doors clicked open with a muffled hiss. Footsteps—heavy, deliberate, and muffled by tactical rubber soles—echoed on the polished concrete floor.

Three beams of high-intensity tactical flashlights cut through the gloom of the lab's entryway. Men in black ballistic gear, unbadged and masked, moved inside with practiced military precision.

"Secure the server towers and grab the boys," a gruff voice commanded over a radio headset. "Sterling wants the hard drives and the brats on a private charter to Panama before sunrise. Leave the woman."

Lucía’s heart plummeted into an icy void. They had come to kidnap her children.

"I wouldn't touch that server if I were you," a youthful voice rang out from the shadows near the emergency battery rack.

The lead operative whipped his rifle around, the laser sight painting a bright red dot on Mateo’s chest. "Hands where I can see them, kid. Walk forward slowly."

Mateo didn't raise his hands. He merely held up a small, black remote control with a single illuminated green diode.

"Do you know what capacitive electromagnetic discharge is?" Mateo asked with a brilliant, mocking smile. "My brother and I designed it for our clean-energy prototype. But turns out, it also makes for a fantastic non-lethal defensive grid."

Mateo pressed the switch.
