Chapter 21 - The Anatomy of a Trap

"Your handwriting?" Lucía’s voice cracked, the sound lost beneath the deafening roar of sirens and the blinding barrage of flashbulbs. "Marcos, that’s impossible. You were an infant when your grandfather passed! How could—"

"The tenement," Mateo cut in, his eyes widening in sudden, horrifying comprehension. He lunged forward, grabbing the corner of the laminated document from Marcos’s trembling fingers. "Mama, remember the winter we were eight? When our apartment on 4th Street was ransacked while we were at the public library? Nothing of value was missing, only our school notebooks and Marcos’s calculus scrapbooks!"

Julian Vance let out a low, mocking laugh from the foot of the stage, flanked by four stone-faced federal marshals in tactical armor. "Bravo, little prodigy. You caught on faster than your mother ever could. Did you really think your deadbeat father and I were sitting idle while you two played courtroom champions?"

Arthur stepped squarely between Julian and the twins, his towering silhouette casting a shadow over the advancing marshals. "Stand down, Vance. You're waving an unverified annex in a civilian ballroom. If these officers take one more step up these stairs without an authenticated federal warrant signed by a district judge, I will have the State Attorney General file kidnapping charges before you reach the front doors."

"Oh, it’s authenticated, Arthur," Julian sneered, holding up a black leather binder emblazoned with a gold Department of Defense seal. "The 2012 Human Enhancement Treaty doesn't require a municipal judge. A tier-one biological asset flag supersedes civil jurisdiction. These boys aren't children in the eyes of the law anymore. They are intellectual property derived from an unregistered cognitive enhancement protocol—stamped, sealed, and classified."

"They are my sons!" Lucía screamed, her maternal fury cutting through the chaotic roar of the ballroom like a scythe. She stepped past Arthur, her eyes blazing with a feral, protective fire that made even the lead federal marshal hesitate. "They were born in a municipal hospital! I labored with them for twenty-six hours! Every single equation in their heads was earned through sleepless nights, cold dinners, and worn-out library books! You will not touch them!"

"Tell that to the genetic registry, Lucía," Julian said coldly. He raised a gloved hand to signal the marshals. "Take them into protective federal custody. Subdue anyone who interferes."

"Marcos, Mateo, move!" Arthur barked into his lapel communicator. "Protocol Omega! Evacuate the principal assets now!"

Before the marshals could mount the stage stairs, the gala hall plunged into pitch-black darkness.

A collective shriek tore through the five hundred elite guests as the emergency strobe lights engaged, painting the room in disorienting flashes of crimson. From the rear service corridors, Arthur’s elite security detail pushed forward, forming an impenetrable human phalanx around Lucía and the boys.

"Mama, hold my hand!" Mateo shouted over the din.

Marcos didn't move. He stood frozen, staring through the strobe-lit gloom at Julian Vance. In his mind, millions of variables were colliding. The cipher on the document wasn't just his handwriting from when he was eight years old—it had been deliberately weaponized, woven into an ancient patent framework to engineer their legal destruction.

"Marcos!" Mateo pulled his twin brother with all his strength. "We have to run! Now!"

Marcos blinked, the shock fracturing into razor-sharp defiance. "They don't want us in a laboratory, Mateo," he whispered fiercely as they sprinted toward the backstage exit. "They want the Blue Folder’s encryption keys. And Julian just made the fatal mistake of showing us his hand."
