Chapter 31 - The Breach of Aegis Vault

The shockwave blasted the reinforced blast doors into twisted sheets of molten composite. Concrete dust billowed through the subterranean laboratory like a volcanic fog, instantly blinding the primary security cameras and triggering the emergency red halos of the auxiliary lighting.
"Down! Get down!" Arthur roared, throwing his aging frame across Lucía and the boys as sharp shrapnel peppered the reinforced glass behind them.
Through the blazing breach stepped six operators clad in pressurized, matte-black exosuits. They carried suppressed kinetic rifles fitted with pulsing blue frequency dampeners—military-grade equipment far exceeding the technology of standard national defense forces. Their helmets bore no insignia, only sleek, blank visors reflecting the crimson emergency lights.
"Targets confirmed: Subject 01 and Subject 02," the lead operative's vocalizer synthesized through an external comm speaker, flat and devoid of human cadence. "Lethal force authorized on secondary biological assets. Secure the prodigies intact."
"Not on my watch," Arthur snarled, slamming his palm against a hidden recessed panel beneath the primary terminal.
Hydraulic barriers shot up from the floorboards, cutting off the immediate line of fire as silenced rounds punched deep, steaming craters into the titanium plating.
"Marcos! Mateo! The sub-ventilation bypass!" Lucía yelled, her voice trembling but fierce as she grabbed both boys by their shoulders. "Move! Now!"
Marcos didn't run. His eyes were glued to the console terminal, where lines of orbital telemetry were executing with terrifying velocity. "If we run, their satellite drone grid tracks our bio-signatures the second we breach the surface. They have thermal orbital locks on our cardiovascular frequencies!"
"He's right," Mateo said with chilling calm, his fingers already darting across a secondary auxiliary slate that had survived the concussive blast. "Their suits run on localized microwave uplinks to synchronize squad movements. If I pulse Arthur’s induction coils..."
Mateo inverted the laboratory’s superconducting power core.
A blinding arc of violet electricity erupted across the floor grid. The six armored operatives staggered as their exosuits short-circuited, hydraulic joints locking in mid-step with violent, screeching groans.
"Ten seconds before their manual resets kick in!" Mateo yelled, grabbing his brother's coat. "Run!"
Arthur drew a high-caliber sidearm from his shoulder holster, his jaw set in stone. "The lower tramline leads to the abandoned railway beneath Sector 4. Take them, Lucía. Go!"
"Arthur, you can't hold them alone!" Lucía protested, tears of soot and terror streaking her cheeks.
"I spent twenty years building an empire off lies and corporate bloodsports, Lucía," Arthur whispered, his eyes softening as he glanced at the twin boys whose minds had outplayed the world. "Let an old man do something decent for once. Go!"

Before she could answer, the lead operative broke through his suit's safety override with a hydraulic hiss. Arthur stepped out from behind the barrier, firing three thunderous rounds straight into the intruder's chest plate to draw their fire.
Lucía seized Marcos and Mateo by their hands and dragged them through the pneumatic escape hatch into the pitch-black tunnels below.
