Chapter 42 - The Citadel in the Clouds

Consciousness returned to Marcos not as a gentle awakening, but as an avalanche of raw binary telemetry.
He opened his eyes to find himself suspended in a zero-gravity amniotic chamber within the heart of *The Sovereign*. Thick, translucent fluid surrounded him, humming with low-frequency bio-currents that stimulated the luminescent circuitry running across his skin. Breathing tubes and neural conduits snaked from his spine, feeding streams of quantum data directly into his synapses.
Beyond the curved quartz glass of the chamber stood Dr. Cassian Cross in the flesh. Gone was the flickering projection; the man wore an immaculate silver tunic, his steel-gray hair pulled back, eyes shining with a chilling, proprietary pride.
"Stabilization complete," a calm synthesized voice announced throughout the vaulted chamber. "Neural integration at eighty-seven percent. Subject 01 is fully synchronized with the Sovereign Lattice."
Cassian touched a digital terminal beside the glass. "Welcome home, Marcos."
Marcos struggled against the fluid, his lips moving, but only bubbles and digital static escaped his mouth. He focused every ounce of his prodigy mind, isolating the parasitic code invading his motor controls, and forced his vocal cords into alignment.
"You... didn't build... this," Marcos’s voice rasped through the external intercom speakers, rough and defiant. "My mother designed... the core architecture. You just... corrupted it."
Cassian gave a hollow, indulgent laugh. "Your mother was brilliant, yes, but chronically burdened by sentimentality. She thought she was developing a micro-neural pacemaker to correct the congenital heart defect that would have killed you in infancy. I merely added the secondary subroutines. The Blue Folder Álvaro kept in his vault wasn't just corporate leverage, Marcos. It was the activation cipher."
Cassian tapped the glass with his silver signet ring.
"When you and your brother opened that file in the auditing hall all those months ago, the acoustic frequency hidden within the digital watermark unlocked your dormant core. You thought you were systematically ruining your pathetic father's empire. In reality, you were completing your own assembly."

Marcos narrowed his golden eyes. Beneath the surface of the terrifying machine logic threatening to drown his identity, his brilliant mind began mapping the internal architecture of the dreadnought. He realized something Cassian hadn't calculated: a system designed to control a genius could also be hijacked by one.
"You think you own me," Marcos thought, letting the computational matrix wash over him. "You just gave me root access to your entire warship."
