Chapter 12 - The Ghost of Apex Dynamics

Lucía broke the wax seal with trembling fingers. Inside lay a single sheet of heavy parchment, typed with chilling corporate precision:
*To Mrs. Lucía Serrano-Miller,*
*Congratulations on the restitution of your domestic estate and the public vindication of your sons’ intellectual brilliance. Justice, as the public understands it, has been served.*
*However, commerce operates on timelines far broader than family court. Prior to his forfeiture, Mr. Álvaro Vance-Sterling entered into an irreversible binding covenant with Apex Global Ventures, accepting an advance capitalization of eighty-five million dollars against the full delivery of the 'Prometheus Algorithm'—an architecture your brilliant boys demonstrated so vividly in the national auditoriums.*
*The patent may now belong to your newly formed foundation, but the debt remains tied to the core technology itself. Apex does not accept refunds in fiat currency. We expect the completed source code and full manufacturing parameters delivered to our Zurich office by the end of the fiscal month.*
*Should you choose non-compliance, we will pursue our claim not through the courts, but through the sovereign repossession clauses embedded in your late father’s original offshore trust.*
*We look forward to an amicable partnership.*
*— Executive Directorate, Apex Global.*
Lucía felt the breath hitch in her chest. Her late father’s offshore trust?
"Arthur..." she gasped, clutching the parchment against her chest. "They're talking about my father's work. My father died penniless in a municipal hospice after Álvaro drained our seed accounts. How could there be an offshore repossession clause?"
Vance took the letter, his eyes darkening as he scanned the cold, threatening prose. "Álvaro didn't just steal the patents you filed together, Lucía. Before he left you in that squalid rental thirteen years ago, he must have forged your father’s signature on an umbrella indenture. Apex funded Álvaro’s entire high-society lifestyle on the promise of an ultimate breakthrough—a breakthrough that Álvaro pretended he was developing, but which actually came from your father’s final, unreleased notebooks."
"Which Marcos and Mateo unlocked," Lucía realized, horror dawning over her features. "The Blue Folder. The algorithm they used to prove Álvaro was an imposter at the national tournament... that was the missing piece of father's Prometheus framework."
Down on the grass, Mateo suddenly let out a triumphant yell. "Marcos, look! The pressure curve stabilized! The core frequency is harmonizing at zero loss!"

The two boys high-fived, their bright, youthful laughter ringing out under the afternoon sun. They thought the battle was over. They thought they had saved their mother, claimed their names, and destroyed the deadbeat who had discarded them like trash.
They had no idea that the monster they had slain was merely the attack dog on a very long, very heavy golden chain.
