Chapter 20 - The Silent Intruder

The ballroom descended into an absolute, suffocating paralysis.

Not a breath was drawn. The cameras broadcast the scene live to six million viewers across international business networks.

"You're lying," Lucía choked out, her voice trembling with rising fury and sheer maternal terror. "My father was a good man! He loved his grandchildren! He would never—"

"Your father was a desperate rogue geneticist facing terminal cancer," Julian interrupted ruthlessly, tossing a certified laboratory certificate onto the stage floor right at Lucía’s feet. "The Blue Folder you used to destroy my brother? That wasn't just energy algorithms. The foundational math at the back of that folder contains the neural synthesis keys that govern your sons' intellectual development."

Julian signaled the marshals behind him.

"Under the International Human Enhancement Prohibition Treaty of 2012, individuals born under non-consensual cognitive synthetic trials are classified as restricted biological intellectual assets. Marcos and Mateo Serrano-Miller are not legal citizens. They are sovereign property subject to immediate federal custody."

"Over my dead body!" Arthur roared, stepping between the marshals and the stage.

The ballroom descended into utter pandemonium. Sirens began wailing in the distance outside the gala hall. Photographers surged forward, flashes exploding like lightning strikes, as security attempted to form a wall between the stage and the federal marshals advancing up the stairs.

"Mama, don't look at the paper!" Mateo shouted, grabbing Lucía’s arm. "It’s a psychological gambit! It’s fabricated!"

"Is it, Mateo?" Marcos murmured.

Lucía turned, her heart stopping.

Marcos was kneeling on the stage floor. He had picked up the certified laboratory certificate. His brilliant, photographic hazel eyes were scanning the dense genetic code printed across the bottom margin.

His hands—hands that had never once shaken, not in the courtrooms, not in the face of mercenaries, not in thirteen years of poverty—were trembling violently.

"Marcos?" Lucía breathed, terror clawing at her throat. "Marcos, what is it?"

Marcos slowly looked up at his mother. The color had completely vanished from his face. His voice came out as a fragile, broken whisper that shattered Lucía’s soul into a thousand jagged pieces.

"Mama... the mathematical cipher at the bottom of this file... it’s not Grandpa's handwriting."

Marcos swallowed hard, his eyes wide with an incomprehensible horror.

"It’s mine."
