Chapter 30 - The Pandora Protocol

By midnight, the storm had passed.

Back inside Arthur’s private laboratory at the Hudson Valley estate, the atmosphere was quiet, warm, and bathed in the soft glow of terminal screens. A fire crackled in the stone hearth of the library above.

Lucía sat on a leather sofa, watching her two boys with an overwhelming sense of peace. For the first time in their lives, there were no subpoenas looming, no corporate raiders knocking at the door, and no shadows from Álvaro’s toxic legacy hanging over their heads.

"We did it, boys," Arthur smiled, raising a mug of hot cider toward them. "Vance Dynamics filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy this evening. Julian Vance is facing life in federal penitentiary, and Álvaro will never see the outside of a correctional facility again. Your grandfather’s patents are legally, irrevocably registered to the Serrano Trust."

"All that’s left is to scrub the stolen files from the DoD cache," Mateo said, stretching his arms behind his head with a contented sigh. "Once Marcos executes the final master key, the counterfeit records will be purged forever."

Marcos sat in front of the master terminal, the original Blue Folder resting beside his keyboard.

"Executing purge command," Marcos said, typing in the root administrative password his grandfather had left in the margin of the original energy paper.

*ENTER.*

A green progress bar flashed on the screen: `PURGING COUNTERFEIT DOD CLASSIFICATIONS: 100% COMPLETE.`

Lucía exhaled a long, joyful breath. "It’s over."

*BEEP.*

Suddenly, the screen went completely black.

The laboratory lights flickered once, then dimmed to an eerie, low-voltage amber.

"Mateo?" Arthur asked, his voice instantly tightening. "Did the backup generator trip?"

"No," Mateo whispered, his hands freezing over his keyboard. "That wasn't the electrical grid. Something just intercepted the root purge."

On the master monitor, a line of blood-red text materialized in the center of the pitch-black void:

`ROOT PURGE INTERCEPTED.`

`MATCHING NEURAL FREQUENCY CONFIRMED: SERRANO, MARCOS.`

`UNSEALING PANDORA PROTOCOL.`

"Marcos, pull the emergency power breaker!" Lucía cried out, terror instantly flooding back into her veins. "Shut it down!"

"I can't!" Marcos gasped, his fingers flying across the keys to no avail. "The input interface is locked out! The system is downloading an encrypted satellite payload from an orbital relay!"

A high-definition video feed suddenly flickered to life on the massive wall display.

The video was dated twenty-five years ago. The setting was an ultra-advanced subterranean cleanroom facility far beyond anything Arthur’s modern empire possessed.

Standing in the center of the frame was a man dressed in a tactical lab coat. But it wasn't Lucía’s father. And it wasn't Álvaro.

The man had piercing hazel eyes—the exact identical hazel eyes of Marcos and Mateo.

The man looked directly into the camera lens, as if staring straight across time into the faces of the two boys standing in the laboratory.

"If this protocol has activated," the man in the video spoke with a calm, terrifyingly familiar voice, "it means my sons have matured, and Julian Vance’s primitive syndicate has failed to capture you."

Lucía gasped, stumbling backward against the console, her hands flying to her mouth. "No... that’s impossible... he was supposed to be dead..."

The man on the screen leaned forward, and in the background behind him, through the glass walls of the subterranean cleanroom, hung two glowing bio-chambers labeled with two numbers: *Subject 01: Marcos* and *Subject 02: Mateo*.

"Álvaro Miller was never your biological father, boys," the man said with a cold, enigmatic smile. "He was merely the decoy we paid to hide you from the Coalition."

A deafening siren began to pulse through Arthur’s bunker as a sixty-second countdown timer appeared beneath the video feed:

`SATELLITE POSITION ACQUIRED.`

`THE COALITION HAS BEEN NOTIFIED.`

`EXTRACTION COMMENCING IN: 00:59... 00:58... 00:57...`

Marcos and Mateo turned to their mother, their eyes wide with sheer, unfathomable shock—just as the blast-proof steel shutters of Arthur’s bunker exploded inward.
