Chapter 50 - The Fourth Sister's Bullet

The air inside the underground complex was sterile, smelling of liquid nitrogen, dry ice, and ancient, recirculated dust. The heavy thud of the massive blast doors locking into place behind them echoed like the lid of a tomb slamming shut.
Claire, Vanessa, and Dominique walked abreast down the center of the tarmac, their boots tracking slush across the polished epoxy floor. Their weapons were raised, three barrels centered on the forehead of the woman who held their identical features.
Subject Zero didn't flinch. In fact, she looked at the three gun barrels with genuine, condescending amusement.
"Fascinating," Zero murmured, her head tilting slightly to the left—a gesture Claire recognized with a sickening lurch because it was the exact unconscious tic she performed whenever she solved a complex algorithm. "The empath, the sociopath, and the weapon. Margaret truly believed that dividing her genius into three distinct psychological archetypes would produce a more manageable asset."
"We aren't assets," Vanessa spat, her voice shaking with rage as she leveled her Kimber .45. "We are the women who dismantled your network, executed your financiers, and turned your board into hunted dogs."
Zero let out a soft, musical laugh that made Dominique’s finger tighten dangerously against the trigger.
"You dismantled nothing, Vanessa," Zero said, taking a slow step forward. "Vance? A corrupt relic who was stealing from my black-budget accounts. Marcus Reed? A pathetic old man who thought he could control me with a paper ledger. You didn't hunt them. I unleashed you on them. You were my scalpel. You cleaned my house for me."
"Shut up," Dominique growled, her voice a low, lethal vibration. "You're stalling. There are no extraction teams coming for you. We severed your satellite links before we touched down."
"I don't need an extraction team, Dominique," Zero whispered. She reached into her pocket, not pulling a weapon, but a sleek, matte-black remote control with a single crimson toggle switch. "Do you know what this facility was built for?"
Claire looked past Zero’s shoulder, into the dark rows of hundreds of towering cylindrical pods lined along the vault walls. Inside each illuminated glass cylinder, suspended in pale green amniotic fluid, was the faint, shadowy silhouette of a human form.
Claire felt the blood freeze in her veins. Her breath hitched.
"No..." Claire breathed, dropping her aim by an inch. "Margaret didn't stop at four."
"Margaret was weak," Zero smiled, her eyes glittering with cold, unholy ecstasy. "She believed four was enough. But I continued her work. Beneath this mountain are three hundred mature clones. The new generation. They don't have memories of mothers, or families, or pathetic childhoods. They know only total obedience to the Architect."
Zero’s thumb hovered over the red toggle switch.
"This switch initiates the simultaneous neuro-awakening sequence. In two minutes, the gas vents will purge this hangar, and they will rise. You three were a glorious draft, but the final edition is ready to be published."
"Dominique, shoot her!" Vanessa screamed.
*BANG.*
Dominique fired. The 9mm round tore through the center of Zero’s chest, ripping through her black coat.
Zero staggered back, gasping, but the grotesque, triumphant smile never left her face. She collapsed onto her knees, blood bubbling over her lips, and slammed her thumb down onto the crimson switch.
A low, subterranean klaxon began to wail through the mountain:
*WARNING. CRYOGENIC PURGE INITIATED. SUBJECT AWAKENING IN T-MINUS 60 SECONDS. FACILITY AUTO-DESTRUCT ARMED FOR RECLAMATION.*
Across the vast hangar, the green lights inside the three hundred glass pods suddenly flared to a violent, blinding amber.
Inside the pods, fingers began to twitch. Eyelids began to open.
Zero looked up at Claire, blood pouring down her chin, and whispered her final words:
*"Which one of you... is the real one now?"*
Her head dropped forward. Subject Zero went limp.
Claire, Vanessa, and Dominique turned slowly to face the rising army of women who shared their exact faces, their exact eyes, and their exact blood.
Behind them, the elevator shaft to the surface detonated in a towering blast of fire, sealing off their only escape route.

The countdown hit *00:45*.
And inside the nearest glass cylinder, the woman behind the glass slammed her fist against the pane, shattering the seal.
