Chapter 47 - Poison in the Champagne Glass

The darkness lasted for three seconds—three seconds of frozen, absolute terror—before the emergency red battle-lanterns flickered to life, bathing the opulent salon in the bloody hue of an abattoir.
Shouts erupted in multiple languages. Billionaires overturned mahogany chairs as private security teams drew suppressed automatic weapons.
Vanessa didn't wait for her eyes to adjust. The instant the lights died, she dropped below table level, rolling across the Persian rug as a burst of suppressed 9mm rounds shredded the velvet upholstery of the chair she had occupied a heartbeat before.
Marcus Reed was on his feet, backed by three personal bodyguards who formed a tight defensive triangle around him.
"Kill her!" Marcus commanded, retreating toward the private elevator leading to the bridge. "Wipe the entire deck! Nobody leaves this salon alive!"
Vanessa came up from the floor, her ceramic blade flashing in the scarlet glare. She drove the blade upward through the armpit of the nearest mercenary, bypassing his body armor and severing the axillary artery. The man choked on his own blood, collapsing like a puppet with cut strings. Vanessa caught his falling machine pistol before it hit the carpet, pivoted smoothly, and fired a three-round burst through the temple of the second guard.
Across the room, the double doors to the service entrance blasted open.
Dominique appeared like an avenging angel, dual-wielding suppressed handguns. She moved with ruthless, mechanical precision, firing into the chaos. Syndicate operators dropped in rapid, rhythmic succession—headshot, center mass, headshot. The ballroom became a nightmare of echoing cracks, shattering crystal, and dying screams.
"Claire!" Vanessa shouted over the din, pressing her comm piece. "Claire, do you read me?!"
Static hissed, then Claire’s voice broke through, breathless and frantic: *"The yacht’s engines have been remotely engaged! It’s on an automated collision course with the Monaco outer seawall at thirty-two knots! The hull will rupture in six minutes!"*
"Where is Marcus?" Vanessa demanded, stepping over the corpses of the high-stakes gamblers who had been caught in the crossfire.
"Bridge deck! He’s trying to reach the helipad!" Claire warned. *"And Vanessa... I decoded the satellite data stream. The Architect isn't on the boat. She’s in the air! She’s aboard a Gulfstream circling over international waters!"*
Dominique reached Vanessa’s side, kicking an abandoned assault rifle across the bloody carpet toward her sister. "We take the stairs. The elevator shafts have been thermite-rigged."
Together, the two sisters sprinted through the smoking ruins of the grand salon, bursting through the titanium fire doors leading to the exterior promenade deck. The Mediterranean wind hit them like a physical blow, howling against the steel superstructure as the 450-foot mega-yacht surged through the dark water, engines roaring at maximum overload, throwing a monstrous wake of white foam into the night.
Directly ahead, the massive concrete teeth of the Monaco harbor breakwater loomed out of the dark, less than two miles away and closing at terrifying speed.
On the elevated helipad at the stern of the ship, an AgustaWestland AW109 helicopter sat with its rotors spinning, the blades beating the air with a deafening *whump-whump-whump*.
Marcus Reed was scrambling up the boarding steps, dragging a heavy, reinforced steel briefcase—the Whitmore master ledger.
"Marcus!" Vanessa screamed.
Marcus turned on the top step, the rotor wash whipping his silver hair across his face. Seeing the two sisters advancing across the rain-slicked deck, their weapons raised, a look of utter, desperate panic crossed his features. He reached inside his overcoat, pulling out a remote detonation trigger.
"Stay back!" Marcus roared over the roar of the turbines. "This entire vessel is packed with twenty tons of ammonium nitrate in the lower ballast! You take one step closer, and I vaporize us all!"
"You won't press that trigger, Marcus," Claire’s voice suddenly crackled over the yacht’s deck speakers, clear, commanding, and laced with absolute authority.
Marcus froze, his eyes darting frantically toward the bridge windows.
Claire stood behind the reinforced glass of the control deck, her hand hovering over the master fire-control console she had just hotwired.
"Because the trigger you're holding isn't connected to the ballast," Claire said over the speakers. "I rerouted the circuit to your helicopter’s fuel tank thirty seconds ago. Press it. See what happens."
Marcus stared at the plastic detonator in his hand, his face draining of all color.
Vanessa and Dominique closed the distance, their boots clicking against the wet steel deck until they were standing at the base of the helicopter steps, their guns aimed squarely at his chest.

"Drop the briefcase, Marcus," Vanessa said, her voice dripping with ice. "Or become mist."
