Chapter 31 - The Ghost Who Shared Their Face

The air in the subterranean vault tasted of ancient dust, liquid nitrogen, and absolute betrayal.
Claire did not move. Her knuckles, split and raw from the brutal fight only moments before, remained white-hot around the titanium drive. Beside her, Vanessa was shaking, the empty Beretta dangling loosely from trembling fingers. In front of them, illuminated by the rhythmic, pulsing amber of the bunker's emergency strobes, stood an impossible phantom.
The woman took another step forward. The surgical scar on her left cheek caught the light—a clean, razor-thin line running from the outer corner of her eye down to the edge of her jawline. But underneath that blemish was the unmistakable Whitmore bone structure: high, sculpted cheekbones, a severe jaw, and those piercing emerald eyes that Claire had seen in the mirror every single morning of her miserable life.
"Who... what are you?" Vanessa’s voice cracked, peeling back the polished veneer of the socialite who had once owned high society.
The woman gave a low, throaty laugh. "Don’t insult my intelligence, Vanessa. You spent your entire life playing the pampered heiress, while Claire played the obedient little martyr scrubbing floors. And I? I was the contingency plan." She tilted the detonator in her hand, her thumb casually caressing the glowing crimson toggle switch. "My name is Dominique. And unlike you two sentimental fools, I actually paid attention to our mother's real work."
"Mother never had three daughters," Claire rasped, forcing herself up against the reinforced cryogenic console. Her legs felt like lead; the adrenaline that had carried them through the Swiss glacier was curdling into sick horror. "The birth records at St. Jude’s—there were only two."
"Birth records?" Dominique’s lips curled in cold derision. "You still think like a commoner, Claire. When Margaret Whitmore gave birth to triplets twenty-four years ago, the Syndicate didn't want an empire split three ways. They wanted an heir to flaunt—Vanessa. A spare to discard—Claire. And a ghost to hold in reserve. A weapon raised in the dark, trained to clean up the blood when the family inevitably collapsed."
Dominique raised her chin, her jet-black hair swinging like obsidian silk. "Father didn't hide me. Evelyn didn't hide me. The Syndicate bought me before my umbilical cord was even cut. For twenty years, I watched you two dance like marionettes on strings. Vanessa kicking Claire under a crystal chandelier. Claire digging through old cellars like a dog looking for scraps. You did all the dirty work. You broke into Zurich. You cracked the master ledger. And now, you’ve brought it right to me."
Dominique extended an open, gloved hand.
"Hand over the drive, Claire. Or I detonate the ceiling, and this five-hundred-ton glacier becomes our shared family tomb."
Vanessa glanced sideways at Claire. In that split-second exchange, twenty years of hatred, reconciliation, and sisterhood passed between their eyes.
"Never," Claire whispered.
Dominique’s emerald eyes flared with venom. "Wrong answer."

Her thumb slammed down on the trigger.
