Chapter 49 - The DNA Vault Beneath the Pyrenees

The AgustaWestland helicopter burned through its emergency aviation reserves, screaming inland across the French Riviera toward the jagged, snow-capped peaks of the Pyrenees.

Inside the vibrating cabin, Claire was tapping into the supersonic jet's transponder. "She’s not landing in Algeria," Claire said, looking up from the glowing green radar screen. "Her flight path is a holding pattern over an abandoned military installation in the Ariège region. An old Cold War subterranean bunker carved three hundred feet into the granite."

"A bunker?" Vanessa asked, cleaning the carbon fouling from her ceramic pistol with a strip of silk torn from her dress. "Why would she bring us there?"

"Because it’s where Margaret built us," Dominique said, her voice dropping into a register so dark it made the air inside the cabin feel freezing.

Dominique pulled a yellowed, classified medical dossier from the secret false bottom of the steel briefcase. She laid three black-and-white photographs onto the console.

The first was Claire as an infant, labeled: *Subject One — Environmental Variable: Cognitive Adaptation & Empathy Suppression (Placement: Middle-Class Foster).*

The second was Vanessa: *Subject Two — Environmental Variable: Sociopathic Narcissism & Resource Dominance (Placement: Elite High Society).*

The third was Dominique: *Subject Three — Environmental Variable: Physical Trauma & Asymmetric Lethality (Placement: Black-Site Operational Training).*

And then Claire’s trembling fingers turned to the final page.

A photograph of a fourth infant, marked with a red stamp: *Subject Zero — Core Genetic Template. Status: Uncontrollable.*

"She wasn't our sister," Claire whispered, her voice cracking as tears of horror finally brimmed in her eyes. "We... we are copies of *her*."

Vanessa stared at the file, the manicured elegance of her composure shattering entirely. "That’s impossible. My birth certificate—my father’s bloodline—"

"Charles wasn't our father, Vanessa," Dominique said, looking out the rain-streaked window as the jagged, razor-like peaks of the Pyrenees rushed toward them through the swirling snow. "Charles was the investor. Margaret was the scientist. She cloned herself, using the Syndicate’s black-budget research funds to create the ultimate corporate bloodline. But Subject Zero was born first. When Zero discovered that Margaret was creating three more versions to replace her, she poisoned Margaret’s medical drip twenty years ago. She staged the car accident."

"She killed our mother," Vanessa hissed, her knuckles turning bone-white around the grip of her weapon. "She killed the woman who created us."

"And now she wants to wipe the redundant files," Claire said, looking down at the dark, snow-covered valley appearing beneath the clouds.

Directly below them, hidden inside the crater of an extinct glacial cirque, a massive circular blast door was sliding open into the earth, illuminated by dual rows of high-intensity runway lights.

The private supersonic jet had already landed. It sat on an underground tarmac, its turbines winding down in an eerie, high-pitched whine.

"Landing in sixty seconds," the pilot yelled through the cockpit divider. "The surface winds are sixty knots! If I touch down, we don't have enough fuel to take off again!"

"We’re not taking off," Dominique said, chambering a round into her assault rifle. "We’re finishing this."

The helicopter touched down violently on the subterranean ramp, skidding across the frosted concrete before slamming against an armored barricade.

The three sisters kicked open the cabin doors and stepped out into the howling, freezing wind of the underground hangar.

The blast doors behind them groaned, beginning to close with the terrifying, inexorable weight of three hundred tons of steel, sealing them inside the mountain.

Standing at the far end of the underground tarmac, flanked by rows of illuminated cryogenic stasis pods that stretched into the dark like a subterranean cemetery, stood Subject Zero.

She was unarmed. She stood with her hands clasped behind her back, watching the three women who shared her face advance through the mist.

"Welcome home," Zero said, her voice echoing off the concrete vault with terrifying, hypnotic sweetness. "I’ve been waiting twenty years to look into my own eyes."
