Chapter 42 - The 60-Second Evacuation

The subterranean passages beneath Villa d'Este smelled of damp limestone, centuries of stagnant lake moisture, and the sharp, chemical tang of fresh blood. The stone walls vibrated rhythmically with every detonation ripping through the palatial estate above. Dust sifted down from the arched ceiling, dusting Vanessa’s dark hair like pale snow as she sprinted barefoot down the spiraling stairs.
"Forty seconds until the secondary strike," Dominique warned from the front, leading the descent with her weapon raised, sweeping every alcove with ruthless, mechanical discipline. "The Syndicate doesn't leave loose ends. When a cleansing protocol is initiated, they don't just kill the targets—they collapse the foundations into the lake."
Behind them, the muffled sound of combat boots hitting the iron steps echoed down the shaft. The tactical unit had breached the kitchen.
"Claire, the override key!" Vanessa demanded without breaking stride.
Claire pulled the encrypted titanium keycard from inside the lining of her ruined gown. "The dock is sealed by a hydraulic pressure door. It was built during the Cold War as a naval redoubt. If Vance made it inside, he’s already engaged the magnetic deadbolts."
"Then I’ll shoot him through the glass," Dominique said flatly.
They burst into the vaulted wine cellar—a labyrinth of antique French oak barrels and cast-iron cages holding vintage vintages worth millions. At the far end, bathed in the sickly yellow glow of an emergency beacon, stood Arthur Vance.
He was frantically slamming his blood-stained palm against the biometric scanner of a heavy steel bulkhead door. The wound in his thigh was bleeding heavily, soaking his tuxedo trousers in dark, arterial red.
"Open, damn you! Open!" Vance shrieked, kicking the steel plate. He heard their footsteps and spun around, pulling a small silver derringer from his waistcoat with trembling fingers. "Stay back! I swear to God, Margaret’s blood was cursed, and all three of you carry the same venom!"
Vanessa didn't even pause. She closed the distance in three long, predatory strides, ducked beneath Vance’s wildly shaking aim, and caught his wrist in an agonizing hyperextension lock. A sharp *snap* echoed off the stone walls, followed immediately by Vance’s high-pitched howl of agony as the gun clattered harmlessly to the ground.
Dominique stepped in, grabbing Vance by his slicked-back gray hair and slamming his face squarely into the titanium keypad. Blood smeared across the glass sensor.
*BEEP-BEEP. ACCESS DENIED. RETINAL SCAN REQUIRED.*
"Look at the camera, Arthur," Dominique whispered into his ear, her voice deathly calm, devoid of any human empathy. She forced his left eyelid open with two fingers and shoved his face toward the lens.
"You think this saves you?" Vance choked, spitting blood onto the console. "You think you won because you exposed me? I was just a regional steward! The Architect... he’s already erased the accounts. He knows who you are. He knows about the fourth—"
"Retina. Now," Claire said, stepping forward. Her voice was steady, but her eyes were fixed on the countdown timer mounted above the door: *00:18... 00:17...*
*BEEP. SCAN CONFIRMED. SYSTEM UNLOCKED.*
The hydraulic hiss of depressurizing air echoed through the chamber as the massive four-ton steel door swung inward, revealing a subterranean wet dock. Bobbing in the dark, churning water below was a matte-black, carbon-fiber stealth interceptor launch, its twin turbine engines idling with a low, menacing growl.
From the staircase behind them, the first commando rounded the corner, his assault rifle raised.
Dominique didn't look. She raised her pistol behind her shoulder, fired twice through the wooden slats of a wine rack, and caught the operator between the eyes. He collapsed backward down the stairs.
"Move!" Vanessa barked, grabbing Vance by the scruff of his collar and dragging him down the metal gangway onto the deck of the boat. "Claire, cut the mooring lines!"
Claire severed the thick nylon cords with the emergency release lever on the dock wall just as a deafening rumble shook the entire mountain. The ceiling of the wine cellar buckled. Massive blocks of centuries-old granite came crashing down, obliterating the staircase and burying the remaining assault squad under tons of rubble.
Vanessa leaped onto the command deck of the interceptor, slammed the twin throttles forward, and engaged the waterjets.
The black boat surged forward like a missile, blasting through the hydraulic watergate into the pitch-black, rain-lashed expanse of Lake Como just as the entire west wing of Villa d'Este collapsed inward behind them in a cataclysmic shower of flame, dust, and roaring destruction.
Behind them, the burning ruins cast long, blood-red reflections across the black water.
Claire collapsed against the passenger bulkhead, her chest heaving, staring at Vance, who was curled in a fetal position on the deck plates.
"What did you say back there?" Claire asked, her voice trembling with a terrifying realization. "You said 'the fourth.' The fourth what, Arthur?"
Vance looked up, a grotesque, bloody smile stretching across his broken lips.

"You really thought Margaret only had three daughters?" he wheezed. "Look at your birth certificates, Claire. Look at the ledger. You were never triplets. You were an experiment."
