Chapter 41 - The Laser on Her Heart

The red dot centered over Claire Whitmore’s heart did not tremble. It burned through the crushed silk of her emerald gown like a branding iron, an unblinking eye of crimson light projected from the belly of an unmarked Black Hawk hovering twenty feet above the churned, foaming surface of Lake Como.

"Down!" Vanessa screamed, her voice cutting through the rising terror of three hundred panicked oligarchs, diplomats, and monarchs.

Vanessa didn't hesitate. She threw her entire weight forward, her manicured hands slamming into Claire’s shoulder blades just as the reinforced glass terrace shattered in a thunderous implosion of crystalline shrapnel. A high-caliber armor-piercing round ripped through the exact coordinates in the air where Claire’s chest had been a fraction of a second before, tearing through the Italian marble pillar behind them and detonating the stone into lethal fragments.

The ballroom exploded into pure, unadulterated pandemonium. Women in six-figure haute couture shrieked, tripping over torn trains and trampled champagne flutes as the thrumming roar of the gunship drowned out the terrified screams. Men with bloodlines tracing back to European royalty scrambled like cornered rats, crawling beneath overturned banquet tables as blinding searchlights swept the hall, turning the glittering paradise into an abattoir of blinding white light and deafening noise.

Arthur Vance, still feeling the lingering chill of Dominique’s gun barrel against the nape of his neck, saw his one desperate chance to survive. With a guttural, feral roar, he hurled himself backward, twisting away from Dominique as the concussive shockwave of a second round struck the floor between them.

"Kill them!" Vance shrieked, scrambling on his hands and knees through pools of spilled vintage wine and crushed glass. "You swore I was protected! Cleansing protocol? You're shooting at *me*, you bastards!"

Over the villa’s emergency speaker system, the synthesized voice responded with merciless, computerized detachment: *"Correction: Arthur Vance has been classified as an uncontainable liability. Termination is non-negotiable."*

From the open side door of the helicopter, two figures dressed in matte-black tactical gear rappelled down thick combat ropes, landing on the shattered terrace with surgical precision. Their rifles were raised, suppressors coughing in rhythm—*thwip, thwip, thwip*—systematically eliminating Vance’s private security guards before the men could even unholster their weapons.

Dominique didn't flinch. While the rest of the room devolved into madness, she rolled smoothly across the glass-strewn parquet floor, coming up on one knee behind an overturned mahogany server station. She raised her suppressed Sig Sauer, sighted down the barrel, and fired three controlled double-taps. Two tactical operatives jerked violently as rounds found the vulnerable seams between their ballistic helmets and kevlar collars, dropping instantly into the rising lake wind.

Claire dragged herself behind the heavy base of a bronze fountain, gasping for breath, the smell of ozone and cordite filling her lungs. Her ears rang violently. Vanessa slid in beside her, her silver heels long discarded, her bare feet bleeding from shards of glass, yet her eyes were cold, calculating, and ablaze with adrenaline.

"You alright?" Vanessa asked, gripping Claire’s wrist with bruising strength.

"I’m alive," Claire breathed, wiping plaster dust from her cheek. She looked across the chaotic hall. Arthur Vance was clawing his way toward the private escape elevator hidden behind the grand staircase, dragging a wounded leg. "He’s getting away. Everything we worked for—every piece of evidence against the Syndicate—dies if he makes it to that bunker."

"He’s not getting away," Dominique’s voice crackled through the micro-transceivers they had inserted before the gala. She was already moving, ghosting through the smoke and flashing strobe lights like a wraith born of the shadows. "He knows the master codes to the offshore clearing houses. We need his thumbprint and his retina before the gunship levels this entire wing."

Above them, the helicopter’s minigun began to spin with a high-pitched, metallic whine that vibrated deep in Claire’s marrow.

"Move! Now!" Vanessa yelled, hauling Claire up by her arm just as the ceiling above them erupted into splinters. Hundreds of rounds tore through the frescoed plaster, obliterating the priceless 18th-century artwork into swirling white ash.

They ran. Vanessa pulled a compact chrome Kimber .45 from the garter holster hidden beneath her slit dress, firing two suppression shots toward the terrace to keep the remaining commandos pinned down. Claire followed close behind, her mind racing through the architectural schematics of Villa d'Este she had memorized over the last forty-eight hours.

"The service corridors!" Claire shouted over the deafening roar of rotor blades. "The wine cellars lead out to the private boat slips beneath the cliffs! If we cut through the kitchen, we intercept Vance before he reaches the vault!"

They darted behind the heavy velvet curtains, slipping through the service doors just as a rocket pod beneath the helicopter flashed orange. A split-second later, the grand terrace ceased to exist, swallowed whole by an apocalyptic fireball that blew the ballroom doors off their hinges and hurled shockwaves down the narrow stone corridor behind them.

The hunt was no longer about revenge. It was an extraction from hell itself—and the three sisters were the only ones holding the keys out.
