Chapter 15 - The Informant with Missing Fingers

The rain had turned into a thick, suffocating fog by 1:30 AM when Marcus pulled the SUV into an alley behind an abandoned meatpacking plant near the industrial canal.
"Stay in the vehicle, keep the doors locked, and keep the engine running," Marcus ordered, checking the magazine of his Glock 17.
"Who are we meeting here?" Claire asked, her eyes darting across the rusted fire escapes and flickering sodium streetlights.
"A man named Frank 'The Hook' Calloway," Marcus said grimly. "Ten years ago, he was Charles Whitmore's chief logistics fixer. When Charles supposedly died, Calloway tried to walk away with three million in bearer bonds. Somebody caught him in an alley, dragged him into a garage, and cut off his index and pinky fingers with pruning shears."
Vanessa shuddered. "Charles."
"Calloway survived because he kept his mouth shut and lived in the gutter," Marcus said. "If Charles is operating out of Terminal 14, Calloway will know what's hidden in those shipping containers."
Marcus slipped out into the fog, disappearing into a narrow corridor between two brick warehouses.
Inside the SUV, Claire stared at the digital clock on the dashboard.
*1:42 AM.*
Vanessa sat beside her, knees pulled up to her chest. "Claire?"
"Yeah?"
"Why didn't you let me fall when he kicked on the screen? Why didn't you let him tear me down? After everything I did to you... after I kicked you under that chandelier in front of three hundred people..."
Claire turned to her sister. She saw the raw, open wound in Vanessa’s eyes—the guilt that all the charity balls and millions of donated dollars had never quite healed.
"Because when you kicked me, Vanessa, you were wearing our father's armor," Claire said softly, reaching out and resting her hand on Vanessa’s knee. "You were terrified that if you weren't cruel, you’d become a victim like our mother. But you took off the armor tonight. You kicked off those silver shoes. That means you’re my sister. And I don't abandon family."
Vanessa swallowed back a sob, placing her hand over Claire’s.
A sudden loud *thud* echoed against the rear window.
Both sisters jumped, Claire grabbing a heavy steel wrench from the glove compartment.
The rear passenger door swung open. Marcus tumbled inside, breathing heavily, dragging a gaunt, shivering man wrapped in a grease-stained army surplus jacket.
The man’s left hand was wrapped in dirty gauze, missing two fingers. His face was weathered like cracked leather, his eyes darting frantically with heroin-induced paranoia.
"Lock the doors!" Calloway croaked, coughing violently. "He’s got eyes on the docks! He’s got eyes everywhere!"
Marcus shoved the SUV into reverse, spinning the wheels on the wet asphalt and rocketing back onto the main avenue before any surveillance vehicles could intercept them.
"Talk, Calloway," Marcus commanded, adjusting his rearview mirror. "What’s inside Terminal 14?"
Calloway let out a raspy, hysterical laugh. "You think he’s after his money? You idiots! Charles Whitmore doesn't give a damn about eighty million dollars! That's pocket change to what he’s smuggling through Terminal 14!"
"What is he smuggling?!" Vanessa demanded, turning around in the passenger seat.
Calloway leaned forward, his rotting breath filling the car. "Twenty years ago, Charles didn't just build a real estate empire. He built an offshore auction network. High-society predators, politicians, foreign oligarchs. He didn't just sell illegal weapons and stolen art... he trafficked human lives. Daughters of political dissidents. Runaways. Women who disappeared without a trace."
Claire felt the blood in her veins turn to liquid nitrogen. "Room 417..."
"Room 417 was where he kept the ones who broke," Calloway whispered, shivering. "Your mother wasn't just his wife. She discovered the shipping logs. She tried to go to the federal marshals with the manifests. That's why he locked her away! That's why he made everyone think she was insane!"
"And what’s at Terminal 14 tonight?" Marcus pressed, his voice taut as a piano wire.
May you like
"The final shipment," Calloway rasped. "The international syndicate shut down operations when Charles supposedly burned. But tonight, a foreign freighter called *The Iron Valkyrie* is docking at Terminal 14 under cover of the storm. Forty women in locked containers, ready to be loaded onto that ship and scattered across international waters where no law can touch them. Charles faked his death to let the heat die down. Now he’s back to cash in the final shipment and vanish forever."
Calloway grabbed Claire’s jacket with his mangled hand, his eyes wild. "And the judge? The judge isn't a hostage to extort you, girl. The judge was the legal broker who cleared the port customs for twenty years! Charles is tying up loose ends. Once that ship leaves at dawn, he’s going to execute the judge, blow the terminal, and burn everything to the water line!"
