Chapter 25 - The Gala of Ghosts

Geneva, Switzerland, looked like a city carved from antique silver and cold marble.

Forty-eight hours after surviving the sinking of *The Iron Valkyrie*, the private jet touched down on a discreet, fog-veiled runway at Geneva International Airport, cleared under an encrypted diplomatic transponder code Charles had surrendered under threat of death.

The Grand Hotel du Lac was hosting the annual Winter Solstice Gala—the most exclusive private banking summit in the world. Behind its towering wrought-iron gates and bulletproof glass atriums, Europe’s old-money dynasties, corrupt sovereign wealth managers, and corporate shadow cartels gathered to celebrate the final consolidation of Argos Global.

Outside the grand ballroom, high above Lake Geneva, snow fell in silent, heavy flakes.

Inside the service corridor of the hotel, Marcus clipped a discreet tactical earpiece into Vanessa’s ear, then turned to Claire.

Both sisters were transformed. Charles’s offshore emergency safe-deposit box in Zurich had provided two things: five million dollars in bearer bonds, and a pristine collection of haute couture gowns reserved for diplomatic events.

Vanessa wore an architectural, backless gown of midnight velvet, her blonde hair pinned in a razor-sharp chignon, diamond-encrusted ear cuffs masking her surveillance receiver. But it was Claire who commanded the air in the room. Dressed in a breathtaking emerald-green silk column dress that matched the vivid, predatory intensity of her eyes, she carried no resemblance to the maid who had knelt on the banquet floor in New York.

"Evelyn is on the top floor, in the private Imperial Salon," Marcus whispered, checking the feed on his tactical smartphone. "The entire floor is guarded by twenty Swiss private contractors with diplomatic immunity. Down here, the gala is her shield. If a single shot is fired in this ballroom, the Swiss Federal Police will lock down the entire canton within four minutes."

"We don't need to shoot her in the ballroom," Vanessa said, checking the miniature silenced .22 caliber pistol hidden in the silk lining of her evening clutch. "We need her to sign the irrevocable ledger revocation before the clock strikes midnight."

"Remember the plan," Claire said, adjusting the diamond choker around her neck—which hid an ultra-thin audio/video transmitter transmitting directly to Interpol’s financial crimes division in Lyon. "Charles stays in the van with Marcus's sedative patch on his neck. We walk into that lion's den together. She expects us to be broken, crying victims begging for a settlement. We show her that the daughters she abandoned are the ones holding the match."

The heavy double doors of the Imperial Salon swung open.

A string quartet played Vivaldi in the center of the vast, gold-leafed ballroom. Two hundred guests in black-tie attire sipped champagne under crystal chandeliers that dwarfed the ones at the Grand Meridian.

And at the far end of the room, standing beside a ten-foot ice sculpture of the Whitmore crest, stood Evelyn Margaret Whitmore.

She was radiant. Dressed in a snow-white silk pantsuit dripping in raw Colombian emeralds, she held court among Swiss ministers and private bankers, laughing with the effortless charm of a queen who had just conquered the world without spilling a drop of her own blood.

Then, the laughter died in the room.

One by one, the elite guests turned their heads toward the grand staircase.

Walking down the marble steps, arm in arm, were the two dead daughters of the Whitmore dynasty.
