Chapter 18 - The Sister's Sacrifice

The pain in Claire’s chest was unlike anything she had ever experienced. It felt as though barbed wire was being drawn through her lungs with every ragged breath.

Her vision blurred into fractured halos of sodium light and falling water.

"Take her to the holding vault with the other cargo," Charles commanded his men, gesturing toward Claire’s writhing form. "Let her spend her final hours surrounded by what Whitmore money buys."

"No!" Vanessa screamed. Her voice tore with raw, feral desperation. "Take me! Leave her! I'll sign whatever you want! I’ll board the ship! I’ll be the daughter you wanted! Just give her the antidote now!"

Charles paused, turning his cold gaze upon Vanessa. "You don't negotiate with me, girl. You submit. You walk up that gangplank on your own two feet, or I put a bullet through Judge Sterling’s skull right now and let Claire drown on her own blood."

Vanessa looked at Claire.

Claire was struggling to rise, her hands clawing against the slick concrete, blood staining her teeth. "No... Vanessa... don't... don't go with him..."

Vanessa’s eyes cleared. The panic vanished, replaced by an eerie, radiant calm.

She remembered the look on Claire’s face under the chandelier two years ago—the broken, penniless maid who had refused to lower her chin even while bleeding on the floor.

*I am a Whitmore,* Vanessa thought. *And that means I know how to destroy monsters.*

"Alright," Vanessa said softly. She stood up, shaking off the guards' hands. She straightened the torn fabric of her emerald dress. "I’ll board the ship."

"Good girl," Charles said, a triumphant gleam in his eye. "Take the judge to the launch. Let's move. We have thirty minutes before the tide turns."

Two guards dragged Judge Sterling toward the wet pier. Charles turned and walked toward the gangplank leading up the towering black hull of *The Iron Valkyrie*. Vanessa followed three paces behind, her head held high.

Before she stepped onto the gangplank, Vanessa looked back over her shoulder one last time.

She met Claire’s fading, desperate eyes.

Silently, Vanessa mouthed three words across the dark, rain-soaked expanse:

*Trust the heel.*

Then she disappeared up the steel stairs into the belly of the freighter.

Two remaining mercenaries dragged Claire roughly across the warehouse floor, throwing her down the steel steps into the subterranean vault beneath Pier 4.

The heavy iron door slammed shut behind her with the finality of a tomb. The mechanical bolt slid home with a deafening *clank*.

Claire collapsed onto the damp concrete.

The darkness was absolute, save for the faint green glow of an emergency exit sign forty feet away.

From the shadows around her, Claire heard the sound of soft, terrified weeping.

Dozens of voices. Women. Young girls. Shivering together on wooden pallets in the freezing damp.

The victims of Charles Whitmore’s syndicate.

Claire coughed violently, spitting another mouthful of blood onto her hands. Her vision swam. Her limbs felt like lead, the Russia-made toxin eating away at her vascular walls.

*I'm dying,* she thought, her forehead resting against the icy stone floor. *Forty-eight hours... I don't even have six.*

Then, her fingers brushed against something hard and metallic on the floor beside the stairs.

It was the silver stiletto heel from the package.

When Marcus had set the box down in the foyer earlier, Claire had slipped the broken shoe into her trench coat pocket. When Charles's men had dragged her down the stairs, it had tumbled out onto the floor.

*Trust the heel.*

Claire pulled the shoe toward her chest with trembling hands.

Why had Vanessa said that? What did Vanessa know about the shoes?

With failing strength, Claire ran her thumbs over the heavy silver heel.

It wasn't solid metal.

Beneath the scuffed leather base, right where the steel spike met the sole, there was a tiny, spring-loaded seam.

A designer shoe commissioned by Charles Whitmore for his daughter's twenty-first birthday.

A shoe built with a hidden compartment.

Claire jammed the tip of the gold cufflink from the cassette tape into the seam and twisted with all her remaining strength.

*Click.*

The hollow silver heel popped open.

Inside lay two items: a high-frequency emergency distress beacon, and a small, glass auto-injector filled with a clear, amber liquid.
