Chapter 22 - Blood in the Black Water

The impact blew the emergency hatch off its hinges, blasting a geyser of foam and jagged fiberglass into the compartment.

Claire was ripped from Vanessa’s grip by the sheer force of the incoming tide. She went under, the freezing Atlantic water filling her mouth and nose, burning her lungs like liquid fire. Darkness pressed in, absolute and suffocating. In the chaos of churning foam and twisted iron, her hand flailed wildly, hitting nothing but sharp edges of torn wreckage.

Then, strong fingers locked around her wrist.

Vanessa.

With a feral scream muffled by the roaring surge, Vanessa hauled her younger sister upward toward a pocket of trapped air beneath the ceiling beams. Claire breached the surface, coughing violently, gasping for oxygen as the water level rose to their chins.

"I’ve got you!" Vanessa yelled, spitting blood from a bitten lip. Her mascara was smeared down her pale face, her eyes wild with adrenaline. "I’m not letting you go! Not again! Never again!"

Ten feet away, Marcus surfaced, holding a deployed emergency survival raft that had automatically inflated inside its wall casing. Beside him, Charles was sputtering, clawing desperately at Marcus’s tactical vest, dragging them both down in a selfish frenzy.

"Get off me, you coward!" Marcus snarled, driving an elbow straight into Charles’s jaw. The patriarch tumbled backward into the foam, dazed, but Marcus still reached out and hauled him by the collar into the rubber raft. "We need him alive. He’s the only one who knows the private routing codes to Margaret’s offshore accounts."

"The hull is splitting!" Claire cried out, pointing toward the ceiling.

A massive fissure tore across the steel plating directly above them as the yacht broke its spine against the outer coral shelf. The sky exploded above them—a violent canvas of lightning, driving rain, and the howling dark of the Atlantic squall.

"Abandon ship! Now!" Marcus roared.

They shoved the raft through the widening rupture in the hull just as a second explosion ripped through the fuel tanks. The blast hurled them into the open sea. A wall of heat and fire flashed behind them, vaporizing the rain for a single second before the freezing ocean swallowed the burning skeleton of *The Iron Valkyrie*.

The raft slammed into the towering swells, spinning out of control. Rain hammered them like needles. Claire gripped the safety rope with bleeding fingers, looking back. The three-hundred-foot luxury vessel—the floating fortress of Charles Whitmore—sank beneath the black waves in less than sixty seconds, leaving only a slick of burning oil fighting against the storm.

Inside the raft, Charles lay coughing on the rubber floor, his chest heaving. Slowly, as the realization that he was still breathing sank in, the look of pathetic terror on his face began to calcify back into poisonous arrogance.

"She won't get away with it," Charles wheezed, wiping saltwater from his bloodied nose. "The accounts in Geneva... they require dual biometric authentication. Evelyn can’t move the master reserves without my retinal signature. She failed. We will rebuild. We will—"

Before he could finish, Vanessa moved with terrifying speed.

She seized the heavy tactical combat knife strapped to Marcus’s vest, unsheathed it in a silver blur, and pinned Charles against the pontoon, the tip of the six-inch blade pressing deep into the soft hollow beneath his Adam’s apple.

"There is no 'we', Charles," Vanessa whispered, her voice colder than the ocean around them. "The moment we touch dry land, Claire and I are going to take every single dollar your bloodline ever stole. We are going to find the woman who bore us and discarded us like trash. And if you speak another word about your empire, I will slit your throat right here and let the sharks finish what Mother started."

Charles stared into his daughter’s eyes. For the first time, he realized that the silver-heeled girl he had raised to be an ornamental socialite had died inside that burning ship. In her place stood a killer who carried his own blood.
