Chapter 43 - The Shadow on the Submarine

The cold spray of Lake Como hit Claire’s face like needles of ice as the stealth interceptor cut through the four-foot swells at sixty knots. Above them, the heavy cloud deck was split by the flashing strobe lights of two Italian Coast Guard helicopters, completely oblivious to the radar-absorbent black vessel skimming the water beneath their infrared sweeps.

Vanessa held the helm with white-knuckled intensity, her gaze locked on the encrypted GPS display mounted into the carbon-fiber dash. Every muscle in her aristocratic face was taut, carved from stone.

"Heading three-three-zero," Dominique said from the co-pilot seat, wiping the commando’s blood from her cheek with the back of her leather tactical glove. "There's an abandoned limestone quarry on the northern shore near Colico. Private docks. No civilian access. Marcus Reed’s extraction team has a transport waiting."

"Marcus is compromised," Claire said suddenly, her voice cutting through the scream of the twin turbines.

Vanessa didn't turn around, but her shoulders stiffened. "What did you just say?"

Claire was kneeling over Arthur Vance. She held the fallen financier’s decrypted satellite smartphone, which she had pried from his inner pocket before Dominique zip-tied his hands behind his back. The screen was still glowing with an active, encrypted data thread that had bypassed the Italian telecom relays entirely.

"The IP address routing the tactical strike on Villa d'Este," Claire said, her voice dropping into a chilling register. "It didn't originate from Zurich or Frankfurt. It was authorized through an encrypted proxy registered to Reed Global Logistics."

Vanessa slammed the throttles into neutral. The boat dipped violently, throwing a wall of spray into the night air as the sudden deceleration forced them forward. The engines dropped to an eerie, bubbling idle in the middle of the pitch-black lake.

Vanessa turned around, her eyes wide with shock and fury. "Marcus has been my father’s attorney for twenty-five years. He was the one who hid Dominique! He gave us the keys to the safehouse in Luxembourg!"

"And he’s the only person alive who had the exact GPS coordinates of our arrival at the gala," Dominique whispered, her hand instinctively dropping to the fresh magazine she was slotting into her pistol. The realization hit her like a physical blow. "He didn't hide me to protect me, Vanessa. He kept me on ice until he needed a weapon to wipe out Vance."

Arthur Vance began to laugh—a wet, rattling sound that ended in a fit of violent coughing. He pulled himself up against the stern bench, spitting dark blood onto the pristine teak decking.

"You stupid, arrogant girls," Vance mocked, his eyes gleaming with malicious delight in the dim red cockpit lights. "You think Charles Whitmore was a martyr? You think your precious father was an innocent victim of the Syndicate? Charles was the *treasurer*! He built the laundering algorithms that moved thirty billion dollars of blood money through the international banking sector every quarter!"

"Shut up," Vanessa snarled, stepping down into the deck well and driving the toe of her steel-reinforced heel directly into Vance’s fractured ribs. Vance gasped, curling inward, but the sick grin never left his face.

"He stole from them!" Vance wheezed through clenched teeth. "Twenty years ago, Charles realized the Architect was going to liquidate him. So what did he do? He took the master keys, encoded them into his wife’s medical trusts, and scattered Margaret’s daughters across the globe like collateral! Marcus Reed wasn't your father's loyal dog. He was the cleanup man!"

"Where is the Architect?" Claire demanded, leaning down until her face was inches from Vance’s. Her calm was far more terrifying than Vanessa’s rage or Dominique’s lethality. "Give me a name, Arthur. Or Dominique won't shoot you. She’ll let me use the medical scalpel in that emergency kit to dissect your femoral artery one millimeter at a time."

Vance’s bravado cracked. He looked into Claire’s eyes—the pale, ruthless gray eyes that were an exact mirror of Margaret Whitmore’s—and he saw no mercy. None at all.

"I... I don't know his name," Vance stammered, terror finally overtaking him. "Nobody sees him. He communicates through the Zurich Clearing House via an orbital quantum relay. But there is a terminal... an analog terminal that bypasses the cloud. It’s aboard the *Sovereign of the Seas*."

Vanessa’s breath caught in her throat. "The private mega-yacht anchored off Monaco?"

"It’s not just a yacht," Vance whispered, shivering violently as hypothermia and blood loss began to set in. "It’s the floating headquarters. The annual shareholder meeting is tomorrow night. Every sovereign head of the Syndicate will be there. And Marcus Reed... he’s scheduled to deliver Charles Whitmore’s original ledger to them at midnight."

Suddenly, the surface of the lake sixty yards off their port bow began to churn.

A massive, cylindrical steel tower broke the black water, shedding cascading torrents of white foam like a prehistoric monster rising from the abyss. The matte-black hull of an unmarked, thirty-meter mini-submarine surfaced silently, its forward floodlights snapping on, trapping the three sisters in an inescapable crossfire of blinding halogen glare.

Over the vessel’s exterior maritime loudspeaker, a cultured, familiar voice with a crisp British accent boomed across the water:

*"Vanessa. Claire. Step away from the prisoner, please. You have performed your roles magnificently, but the board requires Mr. Vance alive for debriefing."*

Claire stared into the blinding light, her fingers tightening around the encrypted phone.

May you like

It was Marcus Reed.
