Chapter 32 - The Avalanche of Secrets

The detonation was not a single boom; it was an apocalyptic roar that vibrated through the tectonic plates beneath their feet.
The concrete ceiling cracked open like an eggshell. Massive slabs of reinforced stone and compacted blue ice began raining down into the vault, shattering display cases and severing high-voltage cables in showers of blinding sparks. The concussive blast threw Claire sideways, slamming her against the central server rack.
"Claire!" Vanessa screamed over the deafening rumble of collapsing earth.
Vanessa threw herself forward, tackling Claire beneath the overhang of the reinforced steel server bulkhead just as a three-ton block of ice obliterated the floor where Claire had been standing half a second earlier.
Through the roaring dust and freezing fog, Dominique was already moving with terrifying, military precision. She hadn't detonated the entire mountain—she had blown the support pylons behind them to seal their escape route while carving an exit toward the upper funicular shaft. She drew a suppressed tactical pistol from her coat, aiming directly at Claire’s chest.
"I don't need both of you alive to access the biometric protocols," Dominique shouted over the collapsing ceiling. "One set of retinas will do just fine!"
*Crack!*
A bullet grazed the steel plate inches from Vanessa’s ear.
"Run!" Vanessa yelled, grabbing Claire’s jacket and hauling her toward an auxiliary maintenance tunnel marked with faded yellow hazard stripes.
Claire lunged into the opening, clutching the titanium drive against her ribs. Another round punched through the sheet-metal doorframe, biting into the flesh of Claire’s shoulder. Pain exploded across her nerves like white fire, but she didn't stop. They tumbled into the dark narrow shaft just as another deafening crash shook the mountain, sealing the maintenance hatch behind them under tons of pulverized rock.
They were trapped in the dark.
Only the faint, flickering green light from the emergency exit glow sticks pierced the blackness. Claire slumped against the damp stone wall, gasping for breath, her hand slick with her own warm blood.
Vanessa dropped to her knees beside her, ripping the silk lining from her own jacket with trembling hands. "Hold still. Let me compress it."
"She’s... she’s faster than us, Vanessa," Claire choked out, the pain making the edges of her vision spin. "She knows this facility. She knew we were coming."
"She doesn't know everything," Vanessa whispered, her jaw tightening with a ferocity Claire had never seen in her sister before. She tied the makeshift bandage with savage tightness. "She thinks we're weak because we have a conscience. She thinks having each other makes us vulnerable."
Vanessa pulled a small, silver key from her boot—a key she had slipped from Evelyn’s corpse before the vault opened.

"The Syndicate didn't just train one monster, Claire," Vanessa said, her voice dropping into a chilling, lethal whisper. "They made one out of me, too. And nobody steals from the Whitmores twice."
