Chapter 45 - The Trap in Monaco

The scent of salt air, expensive tobacco, and unrefined jet fuel hung over the Port Hercule of Monaco like a shroud of decadent rot. It was midnight, twenty-four hours after the bloodbath at Lake Como.

Claire stood on the balcony of an ultra-exclusive penthouse suite overlooking the harbor, binoculars pressed to her eyes. Below, docked alongside the multimillion-dollar superyachts of oil barons and tech moguls, lay the *Sovereign of the Seas*—a 450-foot leviathan of black-painted steel and tinted, bulletproof glass.

Security on the pier was tighter than an international border. Private military contractors in bespoke Italian suits patrolled the perimeter with biometric scanners, while sonar buoys floating in the basin pulsed with blue underwater lights to prevent sub-surface infiltration.

Behind her in the suite, Vanessa was adjusting the diamond choker around her neck in the full-length mirror. She wore a backless crimson velvet gown by Givenchy, slit up the thigh to accommodate the ceramic blade strapped to her inner leg. Her hair was swept up into an intricate chignon, her makeup flawless, masking the purple bruises blooming beneath her collarbone.

"You look like you're going to the Met Gala, not an execution," Dominique remarked from the shadows of the bedroom.

Dominique was dressed in the crisp white uniform of a yacht stewardess, complete with a silver service tray and an earpiece hidden behind her styled blonde wig. On the bed lay three ceramic polymer handguns—undetectable by standard magnetic security arches—along with three micro-drives containing the decrypted ledger files they had pulled from Vance’s phone before his brain matter had painted their boat.

"If I don't look like Vanessa Whitmore, billionaire heiress and socialite pariah, they won't let me within fifty feet of the owner’s deck," Vanessa replied coolly, clipping a diamond earring into place. "The invitation Vance had in his digital wallet was for the high-stakes private table. Two million euro buy-in. It’s the only area on that ship that isn't under twenty-four-hour biometric lockdown."

Claire turned from the window, lowering the binoculars. "Marcus Reed survived the sinking. His tracking beacon pinged an elite trauma clinic in Nice three hours ago. He’s already aboard the *Sovereign*. He brought the physical ledger."

"Then we have forty-five minutes before the auction begins," Dominique said, racking the slide of her ceramic pistol with a soft, ominous *click*. "Once that ledger is handed over to the board, Marcus signs our death warrants across every continent. We hit the security hub on Deck 4, kill the auxiliary power, extract the ledger, and corner our beloved 'fourth sister.'"

"We don't even know her name," Claire cautioned, crossing the room to join them. She picked up the third weapon, checking the chamber with practiced precision. "Marcus said she was trained from childhood. She killed a tactical team when she was twelve. If this is a trap—and it *is* a trap—she wants us on that boat."

Vanessa turned around, her emerald eyes cold, ruthless, and unmistakably Whitmore. "She invited us to her home, Claire. It would be rude not to show her what happens when you threaten this family."

Twenty minutes later, Vanessa stepped out of a black Maybach onto the red carpet of the private marina slip. Flashbulbs from paparazzi kept behind the security barriers strobed against her crimson gown. The European tabloids were having a field day: *The Whitmore Heiress Alive in Monaco after Lake Como Terror Attack!*

She walked with the insolent, untouchable grace that had made her a feared icon in Manhattan society. Two towering private security guards stepped forward, raising biometric tablets.

"Name?" the lead guard demanded.

"Vanessa Whitmore," she purred, not breaking her stride. "And if you point that ridiculous tablet at my face for one more second, I’ll buy the private security firm you work for and fire your entire bloodline by sunrise."

The guard hesitated, scanned her retina, and saw the green verification flash. The digital invitation inherited from Arthur Vance’s estate cleared.

"Welcome aboard, Miss Whitmore. The Owner’s Salon is on the top deck. Enjoy your evening."

Vanessa stepped onto the gangway, her silver heels clicking against the teakwood with deliberate, echoing arrogance.

In her inner ear, Claire’s voice whispered through the micro-comm from the surveillance van parked on the cliffs above: *"You're in the net, V. Dominique is boarding through the lower provisioning hatch now. Security is converging toward the stern. You have fifteen minutes until the Architect takes the stage."*

Vanessa entered the grand foyer of the *Sovereign of the Seas*. Crystal chandeliers cascaded from thirty-foot ceilings, reflecting off walls lined with genuine Picassos and Warhols. Men in bespoke tuxedos and women dripping in millions of dollars of rubies and emeralds sipped Dom Pérignon, their laughter light and carefree, oblivious to the fact that they were floating on a modern-day slave ship financed by the blood of nations.

At the center of the VIP gaming floor sat a single, high-stakes baccarat table.

Sitting on the far side of the green felt, wearing an ivory tuxedo with a single black rose pinned to his lapel, was Marcus Reed. His left arm was in a sling, his jaw bruised and swollen from the underwater escape.

Sitting next to him was an empty velvet chair, reserved for the guest of honor.

Marcus looked up, caught Vanessa’s gaze across the crowded room, and did not look surprised. He raised his glass of champagne in a silent, mocking toast.

May you like

Vanessa smiled back, her lips parting in a cold, venomous grin, and began walking directly toward him.
