Chapter 17 - 48 Hours to Live

Claire and Vanessa did not sit.

They stood shoulder to shoulder ten feet from the table, the freezing rain dripping through leaks in the corrugated metal roof onto their shoulders.

"Release the judge, Charles," Claire said, slapping the leather portfolio onto the table. "The deed is signed. The Margaret House Trust transfers ownership of Terminal 14 back to your shell company. Take your blood money and let him go."

Charles didn't look at the portfolio. He picked up his crystal wine glass, swirling a dark vintage pinot noir.

"Always so transactional, Claire," Charles sighed, shaking his head. "You have your mother’s tedious sense of morality. Do you know why I had to put Margaret away? She couldn't understand that civilization is built by men who are willing to do what is necessary. Great fortunes are not made with kindness. They are carved out of flesh."

"You're not a great man," Vanessa spat, her voice ringing off the steel rafters. "You're a parasite! You hid in the dirt while we took the blame for your crimes!"

Charles’s eyes snapped to Vanessa. The amused warmth vanished, replaced by an icy, terrifying void.

"I made you," Charles whispered, rising slowly from his chair. He was towering, imposing, the aura of authority radiating from him like a physical blow. "You were nothing but a shallow, pampered girl who thought her pedigree was real. I gave you the Whitmore name. And how did you repay me? You wept for a maid. You called a servant your sister. You knelt on a dirty floor and disgraced my bloodline."

"She is my sister!" Vanessa roared, stepping forward, fearless. "And you are nothing to me!"

Charles stared at Vanessa for a long, silent moment. Then, slowly, a sickening grin spread across his scarred lips.

"Is that so?" Charles murmured.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small black remote control with a single glowing toggle switch.

"Did you really think I didn't see your little security hound creeping through my drainage conduits?" Charles asked, pointing the remote at the ceiling.

Before Claire could react, Charles pressed the button.

A thunderous explosion rocked the rear of the warehouse.

Shockwaves slammed into Claire’s chest, throwing her to the ground. Concrete dust and shrapnel rained down. Through her covert earpiece, she heard Marcus’s voice erupt in static-laced agony: *"Ambush! Perimeter charges—fallback! We're pinned at the south bulkhead—!"*

Then the audio line went dead.

"Marcus!" Claire screamed, scrambling to her feet.

Four armed men emerged from behind the shipping containers, leveling weapons at Claire and Vanessa.

Charles walked calmly around the banquet table until he stood looming over Claire. He crouched down, his cold fingers reaching out to grip her chin with crushing force.

"You have twenty-four hours to live, Claire," Charles whispered softly.

Claire glared into his dead eyes, refusing to flinch. "Shoot me then. If you wanted me dead, you wouldn't have bothered with the dinner table."

"Shoot you?" Charles laughed, a dry, rattling sound. "Death is too merciful for the daughter who betrayed me. Do you remember the banquet at the Grand Meridian, Claire? Do you remember the glass of champagne you drank before Vanessa kicked you into the table?"

Claire froze. A cold terror seized her heart.

"You thought your sudden vertigo and nausea were from hunger and exhaustion," Charles said, his voice a mocking purr. "A rare, synthetic isotope. Manufactured in St. Petersburg. Completely undetectable in standard blood panels. It binds to the bone marrow, remaining dormant... until activated by a second agent."

Charles reached over to the banquet table, picked up one of the filled crystal goblets, and tossed the dark red wine directly into Claire's face.

Claire coughed, gasping as the wine hit her lips and entered her mouth.

A sudden, searing fire ignited in the center of her chest.

She collapsed onto the concrete floor, clutching her ribs as an agonizing, white-hot spasm tore through her nervous system. Blood welled up in the back of her throat, spilling past her lips in dark, heavy drops.

"Claire!" Vanessa screamed, lunging forward, but two armed guards grabbed her arms, pinning her to the floor. "What did you do to her?! What did you give her?!"

"The activator," Charles said calmly, setting the empty glass down. "In forty-eight hours, her internal organs will liquefy. Her marrow will fail. She will die screaming in a hospital bed, and no doctor on this continent will ever diagnose why."

May you like

Charles leaned down, looking at Vanessa’s tear-streaked face.

"There is an antidote, of course," Charles smiled. "One single dose, locked in the safe of my cabin on *The Iron Valkyrie*. And you, my darling Vanessa, are going to board that ship with me as my dutiful daughter. You will watch your empire burn from the sea. If you behave... maybe I’ll send a courier with the cure before Claire’s heart stops. If you don't... you can watch her autopsy on the news."
