Chapter 8 - THE SECOND BETRAYAL
Lydia and Grace vanished from protective custody.
The guards were unconscious.
The security footage showed a government vehicle entering the facility.
The driver's credentials belonged to District Attorney Monica Shaw.
Shaw disappeared.
Reyes was suspended.
The system was collapsing around us.
We found Rebecca Sloan's storage unit.
Inside were photographs of everyone.
Lydia.
My father.
Adrian.
Eleanor.
Monica.
And me.
Rebecca had been a forensic accountant.
She had discovered payments connected to my father's death.
She had survived an attack by Adrian.
Then she disappeared.
But she had left a backup.
A tracking system.
The second drive was moving north.
We followed it to an abandoned Caldwell bottling plant.
Inside, Grace sat bound to a chair.
Lydia was beside her.
Monica Shaw stood behind them.
Eleanor held a gun.
She looked directly through the broken window.
Then she smiled.
“Come inside, Claire.”
She raised the gun toward Grace.
