Chapter 2 - THE MARRIAGE FILE

The ambulance doors closed behind me.
But the nightmare did not.
At the hospital, doctors cleaned the blood from my hair, stitched the wound near my temple, and ordered a CT scan.
Seven stitches.
A concussion.
No skull fracture.
I should have felt relieved.
Instead, I felt hollow.
Because every time I closed my eyes, I saw the folder.
CLAIRE BENNETT.
PROPERTY ACQUISITION STRATEGY.
Six months before I met Adrian.
At two in the morning, Detective Nora Reyes entered my hospital room.
She carried a thin folder and the expression of someone who had learned long ago that the truth rarely arrived clean.
“May I speak with you?”
“Yes.”
She sat.
“Your husband has been booked.”
“Will he be released?”
“His attorney is requesting bail.”
She paused.
“But the basement evidence changes things.”
She opened the folder.
The first page contained my name.
My job.
My salary.
My credit history.
My condo.
Then photographs.
Me leaving work.
Me entering my building.
Me jogging beside the bay.
My hands began to shake.
“They followed me.”
“Yes.”
The next page contained notes about my personality.
Independent.
Financially disciplined.
Limited family support.
High professional credibility.
Strong emotional attachment to property.
Then one handwritten sentence.
DIRECT PRESSURE UNLIKELY TO SUCCEED.
LONG-TERM RELATIONAL APPROACH RECOMMENDED.
I knew the handwriting.
Adrian's.
I had seen it on anniversary cards.
Birthday notes.
Love letters.
I turned the page.
INITIAL CONTACT.
CASUAL COURTSHIP.
ACCELERATED COMMITMENT.
MARRIAGE.
JOINT OCCUPANCY.
PROPERTY CONSOLIDATION.
Then the final stage.
TRANSFER CONTROL TO ELEANOR CALDWELL.
I felt sick.
“What did I marry?”
Reyes watched me carefully.
“Did Adrian ever ask to be added to the deed?”
“Yes.”
“How many times?”
“Enough.”
“What did you tell him?”
“That the condo was mine.”
She nodded.
“He changed strategies.”
The door opened.
Maya stood there.
She looked exhausted.
“May I come in?”
I nodded.
She sat beside the window.
“I'm sorry.”
“For what?”
“For waiting so long.”
Then she told me about Lydia.
Lydia Mercer had been a real estate attorney.
She had been engaged to Adrian.
She had discovered suspicious property transfers, shell corporations, bribed inspectors, and fraudulent construction reports.
Then she disappeared.
Maya had heard them fighting the night Lydia vanished.
Lydia had screamed that she had made copies.
She had told Adrian he would never find all of them.
Then something broke.
The next morning, Lydia was gone.
Everyone accepted the story that she had left voluntarily.
Except Maya.
“She owned your condo,” Maya whispered.
I stared at her.
“No.”
“She bought it through a company.”
“Harbor Crest Holdings.”
I remembered the name from my closing documents.
“She used the condo as a private office.”
“What did she hide there?”
“Evidence.”
My phone suddenly vibrated.
A security alert.
FRONT DOOR OPENED.
I looked at the time.
2:17 A.M.
Then another alert appeared.
PANTRY MOTION DETECTED.
Someone was inside my home.
May you like
And they were searching the exact wall marked on the Caldwell blueprint.
