Chapter 16 - THE NIGHT LYDIA DISAPPEARED

Lydia confronted Adrian face-to-face.

“You hit me.”

“Yes.”

“With what?”

“A wine bottle.”

“And after I fell?”

“I left.”

“No.”

Lydia leaned closer.

“You saw me again.”

Adrian said nothing.

“At the lake house.”

His face changed.

“You brought Grace.”

Silence.

“You put our daughter in Eleanor's arms while I was locked downstairs.”

Adrian looked away.

“I heard you.”

“You heard me begging.”

He closed his eyes.

The truth finally emerged.

Eleanor had ordered him to abandon Lydia.

Thomas Vale transported her to Oregon.

Adrian knew.

He had always known.

The prosecutors canceled his cooperation agreement.

He faced new charges.

Thomas confessed to helping bury Lydia's case.

Then he confessed to my father's murder.

Sixteen years after my father's death, his case was officially classified as homicide.

I visited his grave.

I remembered the last argument we'd had.

I had been nineteen.

I had been angry because he wouldn't give me money for a trip.

I had spent sixteen years believing those were my final words to him.

Then Caroline gave me a letter.

My father's handwriting.

COURAGE IS NOT THE ABSENCE OF FEAR.

IT IS THE DECISION THAT SOMETHING ELSE MATTERS MORE.

IF I FAIL, DO NOT SPEND YOUR LIFE AVENGING ME.

BUILD SOMETHING THEY CANNOT DESTROY.

LOVE,

DAD.

Beneath it was an architectural drawing.

A community center.

For families escaping domestic violence.

He had named it:

THE BENNETT HOUSE.

For the first time, I knew what I wanted to build.

Then Reyes called.

Eleanor had escaped custody.

May you like

And the guard assigned to her transport was dead.
