Chapter 10 - THE BUILDING THAT COULD FALL
The Caldwell files triggered emergency inspections across California.
Three towers were evacuated.
A hospital closed a wing.
Two schools shut down.
Then engineers examined the Halcyon Tower.
The structure was dangerously compromised.
I joined the emergency team.
For six days, I barely slept.
Then Eleanor sent me a photograph.
Me entering the tower.
On the back:
YOUR FATHER DIED BECAUSE HE REFUSED TO SIGN.
YOU STILL HAVE TIME TO BE SMARTER.
That night, a storm hit San Francisco.
The tower moved.
Sensors screamed.
We evacuated.
Then the lights went out.
Adrian appeared in the darkness.
“I came to warn you.”
“About what?”
“My mother planted charges.”
He admitted she wanted the building destroyed.
And she wanted me inside when it happened.
We found the first device.
Four minutes.
The tower shook.
Adrian helped me stabilize the damaged structure.
Thirty seconds.
We closed the stairwell.
The explosion tore through the mechanical floor.
The tower remained standing.
Adrian was unconscious.
I survived.
Then I found another message.
THERE ARE THREE CHARGES.
