Chapter 15 - THE HOME THEY HAD ALREADY STOLEN

The fraudulent loan collapsed.
The bank paid.
The condo remained legally mine.
I changed every lock.
Replaced the security system.
Removed Adrian's belongings.
Then Lydia came to see me.
She gave me a stack of letters.
Warnings.
Letters telling me Adrian did not love me.
Letters intercepted by Thomas Vale.
One had been written days before my wedding.
CLAIRE,
ADRIAN CALDWELL DOES NOT LOVE YOU.
HE WAS SENT TO ACQUIRE YOUR PROPERTY.
DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING.
DO NOT CONFRONT HIM ALONE.
I had never received it.
I stared at the paper for a long time.
My entire marriage had been built on a truth I was never allowed to see.
But I also realized something else.
The condo was not the reason I was still standing.
I was.
That evening, Adrian accepted a plea agreement.
He would testify against Eleanor.
The public called it betrayal.
I called it survival.
When we met in court, he looked at me.
“I did love you.”
I believed that he believed it.
That was the tragedy.
He had confused love with possession.
May you like
And he had never learned the difference.
