Chapter 3 - THE WALL BEHIND THE PANTRY

The police arrived before I did.

The intruder was gone.

But my condo had been torn apart.

Drawers emptied.

Closets searched.

My mattress lifted from its frame.

The pantry shelves ripped from the wall.

Someone had known exactly where to look.

Detective Reyes stood beside me.

“They were searching for something small.”

“A drive?”

“A key.”

“A document?”

“Possibly.”

I crouched beside the damaged pantry.

Behind the drywall was a narrow cavity.

Empty.

Almost.

My fingers brushed against something taped beneath a wooden brace.

A folded piece of paper.

Reyes photographed it before opening it.

IF ADRIAN FOUND THIS WALL, FOUNDATION SEVEN IS THE ONLY SAFE PLACE LEFT.

L.M.

I turned the paper over.

A second message appeared.

DO NOT TRUST THE YOUNGER BROTHER.

Julian.

Maya's husband.

Before we could react, Maya arrived with her children.

“Julian is gone.”

Then her ten-year-old daughter Sophie spoke.

“Daddy took me to Grandma's office last week.”

“What did you hear?”

“He said Aunt Claire would sign after dinner.”

The truth landed like another blow.

The dinner had never been about persuasion.

It had been designed to break me.

I examined the pantry wall.

As a structural engineer, I knew the dimensions were wrong.

The column was too deep.

“There is another cavity.”

A forensic technician drilled into the wall.

The camera showed metal.

A steel box.

Inside was a brass key and a photograph.

A concrete parking structure.

A red number seven.

On the back, Lydia had written an address.

The underground garage beneath my building.

We went down.

Seven reinforced piers supported the structure.

Pier Seven had a fresh fracture.

Then the concrete shifted.

A hidden chamber opened behind it.

A hand appeared.

Then a woman's terrified voice.

“Please don't let the Caldwells know I'm alive.”

I froze.

I knew that face.

I had seen it in the photographs.

“Lydia?”

The woman looked at me.

Then at the blood still faintly visible beneath my hairline.

“Adrian did that.”

“Yes.”

She closed her eyes.

May you like

“I knew he would come back.”
