Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN INSIDE FOUNDATION SEVEN

Lydia had survived.

Barely.

She was dehydrated, injured, and terrified of every closed door.

But she was alive.

And she had been hiding inside my building because the Caldwells had found her again.

At the hospital, she told us the truth.

She had a daughter.

Grace.

The child had been six months old when Lydia disappeared.

Adrian was the father.

The Caldwells had told Lydia that her baby was dead.

But Lydia had received photographs every year.

Grace was alive.

Eleanor had kept her.

“She wanted me to know what I would lose if I ever came back,” Lydia whispered.

Then she told us about the Caldwell fortune.

Fourteen buildings.

Inferior steel.

Falsified inspections.

Bribed officials.

Engineers threatened into silence.

And the original evidence had once been stored beneath my condo.

“What was inside?”

“Engineering reports. Bank records. Audio recordings. A ledger.”

“Where is it now?”

“Foundation Seven.”

We had already found the chamber.

The case was gone.

Julian had taken it.

Before Lydia could identify the federal investigator she had contacted, the lights went out.

The hospital doors locked.

A man in surgical scrubs entered.

He carried a syringe.

Reyes tackled him.

His burner phone contained one message.

DO NOT LET LYDIA NAME THE INVESTIGATOR.

The sender was someone inside law enforcement.

The Caldwells did not merely own companies.

They had people inside the system.

May you like

And they were willing to kill to keep their secrets buried.
