Chapter 90 - The Leviathan’s True Face

I stood on the windswept cliff edge, inhaling the cold, salt-laden ocean air into lungs that felt burned and bruised. In my arms, Noah was awake, blinking his bright blue eyes against the morning light, his cheeks flushed with warm pink life.

The nightmare was supposed to be over. Julian was dead. The subterranean database was destroyed. The Vance family’s dark empire had been shattered at its core.

I reached into my pocket, pulling out the encrypted satellite phone I had taken from the terminal mezzanine. It was blinking with one incoming unlisted transmission.

I pressed the speaker button.

A sound came through the small speaker that froze the blood in my veins.

It wasn't Eleanor’s voice.

It was the steady, low, terrifying cadence of an artificial voice modulation system—the voice of an entity far above the Vance family.

"Commendable performance, Clara Vance," the distorted voice spoke, devoid of any human emotion. "You eliminated Julian Vance with remarkable efficiency. You destroyed the Vance syndicate’s offshore nodes in record time."

I gripped the phone tight against my ear, my knuckles turning white. "Who are you? Eleanor is finished."

A cold, mocking chuckle vibrated through the speaker.

"Eleanor was merely an asset manager. A field operator tasked with harvesting the biological substrate. Did you truly believe a seventy-year-old socialite orchestrated the global patent network for cellular immortality?"

My stomach dropped into a bottomless void.

"We allowed you to run, Clara," the voice continued smoothly. "We allowed you to purge the weak links in our regional distribution chain. Julian was incompetent. Eleanor was growing frail and desperate. By eliminating them, you have saved us billions in severance protocols and regulatory containment."

Ahead on the horizon, out on the open sea, the silhouette of a massive naval vessel broke through the morning mist—not a coast guard cutter, not a private yacht, but a pristine, unmarked black stealth destroyer bearing no national flag.

High above the water, its primary radar array rotated slowly, locking directly onto my position on the cliff.

"Noah's genetic sequence is the property of the Sovereign Directorate," the voice whispered, chillingly calm. "You have proved yourself to be an extraordinary guardian. Therefore, we offer you a choice."

"Go to hell," I choked out, wrapping my arms defensively around Noah.

"Look at the water, Clara."

From the depths of the ocean, less than five hundred yards off the rocky shoreline, the black, monolithic tower of an advanced stealth submarine broke the surface in a massive explosion of white water. On its conning tower, armed tactical teams in unmarked black exoskeletons took positions, heavy sniper arrays locking simultaneously onto the rocks beneath my feet.

"You have thirty seconds to board the extraction launch," the voice commanded, cold and final. "Or we will level this cliff with tactical ordinance and harvest what remains of the child from the ashes. Your thirty seconds start now."

Noah let out a sharp cry against my chest.

I looked at the black warship on the horizon, down at the submarine cutting through the surf, and then down at my empty holster.

The game had never been about Julian. It had never been about Eleanor.

I was standing face to face with the true architects of the world—and my thirty seconds were running out.
