Chapter 21 - The Voice Across the Line

The incessant electronic chirp of the burner phone pierced the howling wind like an ice pick to the skull. Rain battered through the jagged shards of the blown-out bay window, soaking the plush carpet and splattering against my trembling bare arms. My heart slammed against my ribs so violently I could taste copper in the back of my throat.
I stepped over the scattered stuffed animals, my hand shaking uncontrollably as my fingers closed around the plastic casing of the burner phone. Tearing the duct tape away from the wooden slats of the crib, I pressed the green button and lifted the receiver to my ear.
"Breathe, Clara," a familiar, silky voice purred through the speaker, dripping with mock intimacy. "You're panting like a cornered animal. It ruins that regal posture you love to parade in front of the board."
"Julian," I spat, my voice dropping into a guttural register I barely recognized. The venom in my throat felt hot enough to melt steel. "Where is my son? If you lay a single finger on Noah—if you let him cry for even a second—I swear to God Almighty, I will hunt you to the ends of the earth and rip your life apart with my bare hands."
A soft, arrogant chuckle filtered through the line, accompanied by the faint, muffled sound of waves lapping against wood and the low hum of a marine diesel engine.
"Always so dramatic," Julian sighed. "You haven't changed since the day you threw me out of the hospital suite. You thought you could strip my name, freeze my bank accounts, and parade my mother through public humiliation? You thought you won, Clara. But a queen without an heir is just an empty throne."
"He is a sick baby, Julian! He was in the NICU three days ago! He needs specialized antibiotics every six hours!" Tears burned behind my eyes, but I swallowed them down, refusing to give this narcissistic monster the satisfaction of hearing me break. "Take the offshore trusts. Take the Manhattan portfolio. Take everything. Just tell me where he is."
"Oh, I'll take it all, darling," Julian murmured, his tone darkening into chilling malice. "Every single dime. But not through a legal settlement. In sixty minutes, you will receive an encrypted transfer protocol. You will liquidate Vance Holdings' liquid reserves into my Swiss holding ledger. No police. No federal agents. If I see a single flashing siren within five miles of your estate, Noah takes a midnight swim in the Atlantic. Tick-tock, Clara."
The call went dead with a harsh, final click.
Down the hallway, the sound of labored breathing broke the silence. Marcus was dragging himself upright along the doorframe, his left hand clutched tightly over the bullet wound in his shoulder, blood pooling between his fingers.
"Mrs. Vance..." Marcus rasped, his face pale as chalk. "I heard him. It's him. Don't call the local precinct... Julian bought off the district commanders three weeks ago."

I gripped the phone until my knuckles turned stark white. A terrifying clarity washed over the panic. The law couldn't save my son tonight. Only blood and cold, ruthless vengeance could.
