Chapter 32 - The Ghost of Blackwood

The subterranean bunker beneath my late father’s estate in upstate New York was colder than I remembered. It smelled of ozone, aged cedar, and high-grade industrial coolant. This was the one sanctuary Julian had never known existed—a secure research vault buried thirty feet below the foundation of Blackwood Manor.
Margaret carefully laid Noah into a portable crib beside the central server rack while Dominic deployed motion sensors at every perimeter access point. Noah had finally drifted to sleep, his tiny fists tucked under his chin, utterly unaware of the crosshairs that had tracked his heartbeat only hours ago.
"Clara, look at this," Dominic called out from the primary terminal. He had plugged the encrypted drive recovered from the hospital feed into the air-gapped mainframe.
On the three-screen monitor, my father’s face appeared in a digitized portrait dated twenty-two years ago. Arthur Vance, founder of Vance Pharmaceuticals, looking younger, his eyes carrying that familiar fierce brilliance that used to intimidate half of Wall Street.
Beneath his image sat a classified file labeled: *Project Chimera — Synthetic Enzyme 97-B*.
"My father wasn't just working on cancer immunotherapies," I whispered, scrolling through thousands of lines of biochemical sequencing. "He found a way to rewrite damaged human cellular structures in real time. An artificial enzyme capable of halting biological decay."
"A fountain of youth," Dominic remarked grimly. "Or an invincible military biological shield. Look at the financing line."
I leaned closer, the glow of the monitors casting sharp blue shadows across my face. At the bottom of the patent filing, the principal shadow investor was listed as *Aethelgard Biomedical Consortium, Zurich/London*.
"Father took their funding in the late nineties when our firm almost went bankrupt," I realized aloud, the sickening puzzle pieces locking together. "Then he realized they intended to weaponize it. He shut the project down, hid the research, and died in that suspicious plane crash three years later."
"And the genetic sequence?" Margaret asked quietly from Noah's crib side.
I clicked on the final encrypted biological appendix. A prompt requested a biometric retinal scan. I held my eye to the scanner.
*Access Granted: Direct Descendant Confirmed.*
The screen illuminated with my father’s final video log, recorded weeks before his death.

*"If you are watching this, Clara, I am already gone. The Consortium will never stop hunting my work. To ensure they could never manufacture it as a bioweapon, I engineered the active synthesis key into an autologous dormant gene within my own lineage. It remains dormant unless activated by a specific pediatric cellular catalyst. If they find your child... they will not need a laboratory. They only need his blood."*
A cold sweat broke out across my back. Julian hadn’t married me for my family’s trust fund. Julian had been handpicked and placed in my life by Aethelgard from the very beginning. Every date, every kiss, every romantic promise had been an orchestrated corporate breeding program to harvest the blood of my baby boy.
