Chapter 41 - The Architect of Ashes

The vault fell into a suffocating, soundless vacuum, save for the rhythmic drone of the cooling fans and the thunderous pounding of blood in my ears. The man staring back at me through the pixelated satellite feed wasn’t a memory or a ghost. He was breathing flesh and bone, his aristocratic posture identical to the portraits that had hung in our ancestral halls before I burned them to the ground.
"You died fifteen years ago in the Zurich plane crash," I whispered, the words scraping against the raw lining of my throat. My knuckles turned stark white as I gripped the steel edge of the console. "I identified the dental records myself. I scattered your ashes over Lake Geneva."
Arthur Vance permitted himself a thin, chilling smile that barely touched his predatory eyes. "You identified the records that my intelligence operatives fed to the Swiss authorities, Clara. A man cannot rule a global syndicate from the center of the board—not when every vulture from Wall Street to Berlin is waiting to plunge their beaks into his throat. A king must become a ghost so his enemies slaughter one another over his empty throne."
He set his crystal glass down upon a teakwood side table, the amber liquid swirling with the gentle tilt of the ocean beneath his vessel.
"And you did precisely what you were bred to do," he continued smoothly. "Julian was an arrogant coward with no stomach for true empire. Victoria was a rabid dog consumed by envy. Heinrich was a brute who mistook brute force for finesse. You cleared them off my board for me, Clara. You dismantled their cartels, secured the global patents, and concentrated the entirety of the Vance fortune back into a single, clean fist. You were my most brilliant investment."
"I am not your investment," I snarled, a wave of incandescent rage burning through the ice in my veins. "I am the woman who dismantled your legacy piece by piece. And I will burn whatever vessel you’re standing on straight to the ocean floor."
"Tsk, tsk. Spoken like a true Vance," Arthur murmured, checking the platinum watch on his wrist. "Look at your secondary radar feed, darling. My tactical unit will breach Blackwood Manor in precisely four minutes. You have spent your entire life running, fighting, and weeping for that infant. But Noah’s cellular structure cannot stabilize without the primary maternal carrier. You are coming with me, Clara. Willingly or in a body bag—the enzyme survives either way."
The screen snapped to black with a vicious digital crackle.
Instinct obliterated the shock before panic could seize my lungs. I slammed my hand into the master emergency console, tearing the satellite transceiver out of the wall to sever any lingering uplink. Blackwood Manor’s perimeter alarms screamed to life across the subterranean displays, blaring deep amber warnings. On the radar map, three unregistered heavy-lift assault birds were dropping rapidly beneath the civilian radar envelope, carving through the stormy coastal sky at two hundred knots, homing straight in on the coordinates of my home.
I spun around, grabbed my tactical sidearm from the lockbox beneath the desk, and hit the speed-dial on my encrypted radio.
