Chapter 19 - The Breached Sanctuary

"Marcus! Answer the phone! Marcus!" I screamed into my cell phone as the driver tore back toward Boston at ninety miles per hour, hydroplaning across the interstate.

Static hissed through the speaker. Then, a faint, breathless voice: *"Ambush... Mrs. Vance... perimeter compromised... power cut to the entire block..."*

A gunshot echoed through the receiver, followed by the sickening thud of a body hitting the floor, and the line went dead.

"Faster!" I slammed my fists against the dashboard. "Step on the gas, damn it, FASTER!"

The rain lashed violently against the windshield as we blasted through red lights, tires skidding around the historic corners of Beacon Hill. When the estate finally emerged through the darkness, the wrought-iron gates were swung wide open, hanging off broken hinges.

The grand stone mansion was pitch black. No security floodlights. No porch lamps.

The front oak doors were splintered inward, the heavy brass lock sheared clean off.

I threw myself out of the vehicle before it had even fully stopped, my boots splashing through pools of water mixed with dark, crimson stains on the marble front steps.

"MARGARET!" I shrieked, stumbling into the shadowy entrance hall. "NOAH!"
