Chapter 52 - The Cold Extraction

The lower catwalk of the tender bay was already half-submerged in black, oily water. Steam hissed violently from burst cooling lines, blinding our vision and filling the air with the suffocating smell of burning diesel and brine. Below us, suspended by heavy steel cables above a flooded launch well, swayed a high-speed military-grade interceptor boat—our only lifeline.

"Arthur, input the release code for the hydraulic cradle!" Marcus ordered, pushing the scientist toward the wall-mounted console while keeping his rifle trained on the access ladder behind us.

Bootsteps clattered against the iron grating above. The Syndicate assault team had breached the upper decks. Gunfire erupted immediately, rounds pinging off the bulkhead around us like lethal hornets.

"They're already down the spine!" Marcus shouted, dropping to one knee and firing two deafening bursts up the stairwell. The leading operative screamed, tumbling down the iron steps into the rising water. "Clara, get Noah into the vessel! Now!"

I didn't hesitate. Shielding Noah with my own body, I leaped across the three-foot gap between the buckled catwalk and the deck of the tactical interceptor. Landing hard on the non-slip composite deck, the impact jarred my bruised shoulder, but I curled tightly to absorb the shock, keeping Noah entirely unharmed. He let out a sharp cry, his tiny hands clutching the fabric of my armored vest.

"I have you, baby," I whispered frantically, strapping his carrier into the shock-absorbing jump seat behind the helm. "Mama has you. Nobody is taking you."

At the catwalk console, Arthur’s fingers were shaking violently across the keypad. "The primary release is jammed! The structural twist locked the starboard winch!"

"Manual override, you coward!" I screamed, climbing back to the gunwale.

Before Arthur could pull the manual release lever, a heavy round punched through the steel plate beside his head, followed by a three-round burst that shattered the console. Arthur collapsed against the railing, clutching his shoulder with a shrill cry.

From the shadows of the upper gantry, a massive figure stepped into the dim emergency lights. He wore non-reflective naval tactical armor with the insignia of an ouroboros stamped in silver across his chest plate—the mark of the Vanguard Syndicate's inner enforcement ring.

"Drop the child, Clara," the man spoke through an external comms unit, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. "The Vance bloodline belongs to the Ascendancy. Surrender the boy, and your death will be painless."

"You want my son?" I yelled back over the roaring floodwater, leveling my sidearm straight at the winch release cable above his head. "Come and fish him out of hell!"

I fired three consecutive armor-piercing rounds directly into the hydraulic cylinder holding the portside cable. The pressurized fluid erupted in a blinding flash, snapping the high-tensile steel wire. The heavy steel cradle slammed downward into the gushing sea with tremendous force, plunging our boat into the dark Atlantic waters just as Marcus dove over the railing and landed beside me, cutting the final tether with a tactical blade.
