Chapter 16 - The Ambush in Courtroom 4B

Courtroom 4B was packed to the brim with paid tabloid reporters when we walked through the double doors the following morning. Daniel sat at the defense table, clean-shaven, dressed in a custom navy Tom Ford suit, playing the role of the remorseful, reformed prodigal son to absolute perfection.
Beside him sat Richard Sterling, exuding the cold, calculating arrogance of a Wall Street predator.
When the judge took the bench, Daniel’s attorney immediately went on the attack.
"Your Honor, my client made grave errors in his youth, errors for which he has paid his debt to society," the lawyer argued smoothly, projecting a series of altered medical logs from two years prior onto the courtroom screens. "However, the evidence shows that upon his return from an urgent business trip, his emotionally unstable wife completely fabricated a narrative of abandonment. She conspired with his aging, vulnerable mother to systematically erase him from his son’s life!"
Daniel wiped a single, theatrical tear from his cheek. "All I want, Your Honor, is to hold my little boy. She won't even let me hear his voice."
My knuckles turned white where I gripped the armrest. I wanted to stand up and scream about the blood-soaked sheets, the hypothermia, the mistress in Cabo, the forged signatures. But Evelyn held me firmly by the forearm.
"Your Honor," Evelyn counter-argued fiercely, "Mr. Vance is a convicted felon who abandoned a critically ill infant. His parental rights were legally severed!"
Judge Harrington peered over his spectacles, his expression chillingly unsympathetic. "The Commonwealth believes in restorative justice, Counsel. A biological father who has served his time has constitutional rights. Given the conflicting claims regarding the grandmother's mental competency and the mother’s past psychiatric state, this court will not allow complete alienation."
The gavel slammed down like a thunderclap.

"The court orders mandatory, bi-weekly supervised visitation at the Suffolk Family Services Center, beginning this Friday."
Daniel turned slowly in his chair, locking eyes with me across the aisle. His lips curled into a victorious, predatory sneer.
