Chapter 31 - The Shattered Glass

The crimson dot rested directly over my newborn son’s heart. In that fraction of a second, the universe shrank down to the sound of my own pulse roaring in my ears like a freight train.
"Get down!" I screamed, lunging across the sterile hospital room before the thought could even form in my mind.
My body moved on sheer maternal instinct. I threw myself over Noah’s acrylic bassinet, shielding his fragile, swaddled frame with my own spine, wrapping both arms around him just as the window shattered inward. The heavy double-paned glass exploded into thousands of crystalline daggers, showering the hardwood floor in a violent spray. A suppressed thud punched into the far plaster wall right where my skull had been resting a heartbeat before.
Margaret dropped instantly to the floor, rolling beneath the visitor's sofa with a speed that belied her age. "Clara! Stay low!"
Noah let out a piercing wail, jolted awake by the violent pop of the bullet and the rain of debris. I tucked his tiny head into the crook of my neck, tasting copper on my lip where a stray shard of glass had grazed my cheek. The cold night air poured in through the gaping jagged hole in the window frame, carrying the smell of ozone and burning gunpowder.
"Dominic! Code Black!" I yelled into the open encrypted line still resting on the nightstand.
The door to the hospital suite kicked inward before the echo died. Dominic burst in, his sidearm drawn, two tactical bodyguards flanking him in matching Kevlar vests. He scanned the broken glass, spotted the trajectory of the bullet lodged in the drywall, and immediately threw a heavy ballistic shield between us and the open window.
"Sniper on the commercial rooftop across the boulevard," Dominic barked into his shoulder mic. "Team Two, breach that roof right now! Cut off the fire escape!"
He knelt beside me, his steady hand grasping my trembling shoulder. "Are you hit? Is Noah hurt?"
"We're intact," I gasped, my voice shaking but my grip on Noah ironclad. "He didn't want Julian’s money, Dominic. Julian was just a distraction. A pawn. They’re after Noah’s DNA. Aethelgard Consortium."
Dominic’s expression hardened into granite. "We cannot stay here. If they have the coordinates to this private wing, hospital security is already compromised. We move to the secondary extraction zone right now."

Within thirty seconds, Noah was strapped into an armored pediatric carrier, covered with Kevlar plating. Dominic guided Margaret and me through the service elevator, down through the subterranean laundry corridors, and into the belly of the hospital parking deck. As our convoy’s armored SUV tore through the exit gate, sirens wailed in the distance.
I looked back through the tinted window at the towering hospital facade. On the eighth floor, the dark silhouette of our blown-out window looked like a black tooth in a bright smile. Julian’s greed had been a nuisance compared to this. A multi-billion-dollar global syndicate had marked my infant son as a patented corporate weapon, and I realized with terrifying clarity that our war had only just begun.
