Chapter 64 - The Sovereign Antidote

Before Eleanor could squeeze the trigger, a thunderous explosion blew the heavy steel ventilation grate behind her completely off its hinges.

A figure clad in midnight-black tactical gear emerged through the dust, firing a controlled three-round burst that shattered the handrail right in front of Eleanor's feet, throwing the elderly matriarch violently onto her back. It was Marcus, bloodied and soot-stained, carrying a smoking breaching charge launcher.

"Clear the floor, Clara!" Marcus bellowed over the blaring klaxons. "The facility's core is triggering a bio-purge! We have three minutes before the halon gas deploys!"

"The vial! It's under the floor grate!" I yelled back, my voice cracked and hoarse.

Noah’s breathing had gone completely silent. His lips were turning a terrifying, dusky blue, his tiny body slack against my chest. Panic, cold and sharp as glass, seized my heart. "Noah! Noah, stay with me! Don't you dare close your eyes!"

I dropped to my knees beside the floor conduit, thrusting my arm through the steel bars. The gap was narrow, sharp edges biting deep into the flesh of my forearm, tearing open skin and drawing ribbons of blood, but I felt nothing. My fingertips scraped the cold, polished glass of the amber vial.

Half an inch. Just half an inch more.

Behind me, Julian was dragging himself across the floor like a broken beast, leaving a streak of dark blood and frost across the tiles, reaching for his fallen pistol. "It's... mine..." he wheezed, his teeth stained red. "Everything... belongs to the Vance line..."

I wrenched my arm forward with all the strength left in my battered body, ignoring the sickening tear of muscle, and my fingers clamped tightly around the cylinder.

I yanked it free, withdrawing my bloodied arm through the grate.

The vial was intact. Inside, the golden fluid shimmered with active bio-luminescent enzymes.

I didn't wait for a sterile syringe. The vial was designed with an integrated emergency intradermal auto-injector tip on its base. I wiped Noah’s feverish thigh with my sleeve, pressed the base against his skin, and slammed the plunger down.

A faint mechanical hiss echoed in the vault.

For three agonizing seconds, nothing happened. Noah remained limp, unresponsive, his heartbeat faint as a fluttering moth.

"Please," I sobbed, pressing my forehead against his burning brow, my tears mixing with the blood on my face. "Please, baby. Mommy's here. Mommy's got you."

May you like

Then, a sudden, violent gasp ripped from Noah’s lungs.

A flush of healthy, radiant pink surged across his pale cheeks, chasing away the bruised veins. His eyes blinked open, dark and vivid, and he let out a loud, clear, resonant cry that echoed through the dying vault.
