Chapter 51 - Into the Abyssal Breach

The freezing Atlantic rushed through the fractured observation bay like a roaring beast, tearing mahogany panels from the walls and instantly submerging the salon floor in three feet of churning foam. The shockwave of the torpedo strike had knocked me backward, but my arms clamped down instinctively over the reinforced tactical harness holding Noah tightly against my chest. My infant son whimpered against the sound-dampening seal of the carrier, his heartbeat fluttering against my ribs like a frightened sparrow.
"Move! Clara, get up!" Marcus bellowed through the rising thunder of groaning steel. Blood streamed from a jagged laceration across his forehead, but his grip was iron as he hauled me to my feet. Water was already rising past our knees, carrying shattered crystal, loose furniture, and tactical gear in a violent whirlpool toward the lower companionway.
Across the listing room, Arthur Vance was clawing his way up the tilted deck toward an overturned stainless-steel workstation. The old scientist’s face was smeared with saltwater and blood, but his manic grin had vanished, replaced by sheer animal terror. He knew better than anyone what the Syndicate did to contractors who failed to deliver.
"They won't leave survivors!" Arthur screamed over the blaring siren, his voice cracking with hysteria. "The submarine—it’s the *Avernus*! They were never going to let me walk away with the boy! They’re collapsing the hull to erase every trace of us!"
"Then you die first, Arthur!" Marcus snarled, raising his sidearm toward the scientist.
"No!" I intercepted Marcus's arm, staring through the storm of spraying seawater at the terrified geneticist. "He has the encryption cipher for Noah’s medical stabilization sequence! If he drowns, Noah dies when the cellular countdown finishes!"
Another violent thud shook the *Leviathan*, accompanied by the sickening screech of the yacht’s spine buckling beneath thousands of tons of hydro-pressure. The ship was dying under our feet, pitching sideways at a thirty-degree angle. Through the shattered panoramic windows, the monolithic silhouette of the black submarine cut through the roiling fog, its twin searchlights pinning our sinking vessel like a stag in the crosshairs. A hydraulic hiss echoed across the water as the sub's deck hatch opened, and silhouettes clad in full combat gear began deploying rapid-assault boarding craft into the sea.
"They're not just sinking her," I breathed, feeling the ice-cold spray bite into my skin. "They're boarding to retrieve Noah's body and the drive."

"Then we make them bleed for every inch," Marcus said, racking the slide of his combat shotgun. "Emergency tender bay is on the port stern. If the ballast tanks haven't ruptured, we have ninety seconds before this entire deck is under fifty fathoms of ocean."
I grabbed Arthur by his collar, dragging the trembling architect of my family's ruin across the flooding deck. "Move your feet, Arthur," I whispered directly into his ear, my voice devoid of mercy. "You built this nightmare. Now you're going to help me survive it."
