Chapter 7 - THE TRAITOR'S PRICE

As the police car sped away, the wail of an approaching ambulance echoed from the valley.
Marcus gently laid Chloe onto a plush velvet sofa in the adjacent living room, wrapping her shivering body in a cashmere throw blanket.
"The paramedics are pulling up right now, my love," Marcus whispered, pressing a kiss to her pale forehead. "Just breathe."
Before he could stand up, the night security manager—the man who had accepted Victoria’s fifty-thousand-dollar bribe—rushed into the foyer. His face was pale with terror.
"Mr. Vance!" the manager stammered, looking at the broken glass. "I... I was doing a perimeter check! I didn't know she was inside!"
Marcus turned around.
He didn't yell. He didn't raise his voice. He walked slowly toward the trembling security guard, stopping just inches from his face.
"You turned off the rear biometric locks for fifty thousand dollars," Marcus stated, his voice a lethal, quiet vibration.
"Sir, no! I swear—"
"My forensic accountants have already traced the offshore transfer," Marcus interrupted, his eyes burning with a terrifying, contained wrath. "You sold the safety of my wife and my unborn child to pay off a gambling debt."

The manager’s knees buckled.
"I am not going to kill you," Marcus whispered, leaning in so only the traitor could hear. "But by tomorrow morning, you will be facing federal charges for complicity in an attempted manslaughter. And I will personally ensure that no legal firm in this country defends you."
