Chapter 6 - THE SIRENS' SONG

The flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers cut through the autumn storm, painting the high windows of the Vance estate in frantic, strobe-like colors.

For Victoria Sterling, those lights were the end of the world.

Two heavily armed police officers stormed through the grand double doors, their heavy boots tracking rainwater across the black and white marble floor. They did not care about the Baccarat crystal. They did not care about the Sterling name.

"Victoria Sterling," the lead officer announced, his voice devoid of any high-society deference. "You are under arrest for breaking and entering, and the aggravated assault of a pregnant woman."

"No! Wait!" Victoria shrieked, struggling violently as the officer grabbed her arms, twisting them behind her back. "Do you know who my father is?! I demand to make a phone call!"

Click. Clack.

The cold steel handcuffs snapped shut around her wrists.

Marcus stood a few feet away, holding Chloe securely against his chest. He watched Victoria with eyes as cold as dead stars.

"Your father cannot buy your way out of a 4K video recording, Victoria," Marcus said smoothly.

Victoria was dragged kicking and screaming out the front doors. The rain instantly soaked her immaculate red satin gown, flattening her sleek hair against her face. Her designer stilettos—the very weapons she had used to threaten an unborn child—scraped pathetically across the wet asphalt as she was shoved into the back of the police cruiser.
